Remembering Arsene Wenger's 17 years at Arsenal

17 years ago, Arsene Wenger was catapulted from Japanese football to Arsenal — right in the heart of what is supposedly the best league in the world. We scoured articles across the internet, and picked some choice excerpts on the man whose influence on the Premier League cannot be underestimated. - The Daily Mail have put together ‘17 reasons to love Wenger’ — which include him sliding into the sea on holiday, his sharp dressing sense, him standing above the dugout at Old Trafford, him saying that he didn’t see fouls for which his players were sent off and him saying: “You’ve certainly tried to go out with a girl and find she has chosen someone else. You don’t commit suicide,” after missing out on a player. And there’s lots more! [caption id=“attachment_1145603” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] ![Arsene Wenger -- managing Arsenal for 17 years. Getty Images[/caption] - Well not everyone was impressed when Arsenal got Wenger from Japan. After all, it was supposed to be Johan Cruyff. Anyway, The Guardian reminisces about Wenger’s appointment, also quoting former captain Tony Adams saying: “At first, I thought, what does this Frenchman know about football? He wears glasses and looks more like a schoolteacher.” They also have a couple of articles from the past about how foreign managers can’t win the English title and one praising Wenger: - Arsenal’s official website have a brilliant set of numbers for you to devour. Their stats package says: “Even if he lost each of his next 130 games in charge, he would still have the highest win ratio of any Arsenal manager in history.” They have his complete record and some good comparisons… absolute heaven if you’re an Arsenal fan. Click here for the package. - It can’t be a better day for Wenger. On the day they’re going to play Napoli in the Champions League, former Liverpool and Chelsea manager Rafael Benitez has crowned him the best manager in the Premier League. “I think he’s a great manager, great person, someone that knows the league here in England, experience in Europe and always in the top four,” he told The Telegraph. - Finally, Mirror have a gallery of Wenger and his time at Arsenal Click here to view it. And we’ve pulled out a couple of very popular Arsene Wenger YouTube videos below.
