Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku reveals he did not think twice about joining Manchester United from Everton. The 24-year-old striker is set to sign for the Red Devils despite his boyhood club Chelsea matching the initial £75 million fee.
"I joined Manchester United because they are the biggest club in the world and are hungry to win the league again. I'm delighted to be part of their history. Who'd say no to the biggest club in the world? Best stadium in England, the best fans," Lukaku was quoted saying by ESPN FC.
According to British media, Chelsea tried to re-sign Lukaku but were reluctant to pay the agent fee to Mino Raiola, Lukaku's agent.
Lukaku has been the subject of intense transfer speculation since April when he rejected a contract extension and instead expressed his desire to leave Everton in order to play Champions League football. Earlier in April, United defeated Ajax to claim their maiden Europa League trophy which enabled them to participate in next season's Champions League.
"I think Manchester United at the minute want to be the dominant team, that dominant force. If you look at their history, it says enough. To become part of a club like them is something that I really wanted. I'm thankful for the opportunity that they gave me. I didn't have to think twice," said the Belgian.
Lukaku scored 71 goals in 133 games for Everton since joining the Merseyside club permanently for £28 million in 2014. The striker believes that Jose Mourinho is the right guy to guide him and United presents the perfect opportunity to win trophies.
