In an interview with Dawn, PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan revealed the board's intent to have Misbah extend his reign, saying "Though Misbah is independent to decide about his future, the PCB has suggested him to continue till 2018."

The 42-year-old, who has been captaining the Test team since 2010, missed the second Test  against New Zealand in Hamilton due to the critical illness and subsequent death of his father-in-law.

Ahead of the Hamilton Test, Pakistan vice-captain Azhar Ali had said, "We'll miss Misbah defintely. We have to cope with that now and whoever comes into the side will take that opportunity and give us runs, as well as the stability he gives us in the middle."

However, the Pakistan middle order has failed to cope with Misbah's absence. They capitulated spectacularly in both innnings, which put them at a serious disadvantage and led to their eventual loss and a 2-0 series whitewash at the hands of New Zealand.

“Because of his excellent fitness, Misbah can easily play international cricket for few more years. Besides, he is calm, well-educated, calculative and balanced and enjoys a lot of respect in the team,” Shaharyar Khan told Dawn.

Misbah has captained Pakistan in 50 Test matches, winning 24 of them with a 48 percent win rate.

Misbah and Pakistan will now be looking for a stronger showing in December during their away Test series against a seemingly resurgent Australia side, who avoided a 3-0 series whitewash by beating South Africa in their series' final Test at Adelaide.
