84 by Suresh Raina is the highest score by a Gujarat Lions batsman in IPL. The previous highest was 75 also by Suresh Raina against SRH at Rajkot in 2016.

  • 23:58 (IST)

Suresh Raina is the 'Man of the Match'!

  • 23:58 (IST)

  • 23:55 (IST)

A comfortable win in the end for the Gujarat Lions. KKR will rue the fact that they did not push on past 200 after getting 96 in the first 10 overs. Brendon McCullum gave GL a brisk start and Suresh Raina carried on from where Baz left off. This batting-heavy Gujarat team would be well off chasing totals, but it will not be everyday that they would chase down 190-200.

  • 23:51 (IST)

Brendon McCullum goes past Nitish Rana to get the 'Orange Cap' for himself, and now he sits on top with 258 runs in his kitty.

  • 23:47 (IST)

    After 18.2 overs,Gujarat Lions 188/6 ( Ravindra Jadeja 19 , James Faulkner 4)

Faulkner hands the strike back to Rajkot boy Jadeja, who then finishes the game with a boundary towards point!

Gujarat Lions defeat Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets, and stretch their head-to-head record to 3-1!

  • 23:45 (IST)

    After 18 overs,Gujarat Lions 183/6 ( Ravindra Jadeja 15 , James Faulkner 3)

Kuldeep into his final over. Jadeja brings up the 50-stand with a single first ball. SIX! Raina in a hurry to wrap the game up right now! Goes down on one knee, and clears the midwicket boundary with ease.
OUT! Kuldeep pulls his length back while bowling outside off in the fifth delivery, which Raina slices towards cover to get dismissed for 84. Australian all-rounder, and renowned finisher James Faulkner walks out to bat at No 8, and starts off with a triple.

Gujarat Lions need 5 to win from 12 balls.

  • 23:44 (IST)

  • 23:42 (IST)

OUT! Raina won't be there to finish things off for his side, after slicing a back-of-length delivery from Kuldeep towards cover, where Manish Pandey takes a fine catch. Captain's knock from Raina nevertheless, and it was every bit a spectacular innings! GL 180/6

    Suresh Raina c Pandey b Yadav 84(46)

  • 23:40 (IST)

Gujarat needed 33 off 24 balls at the start of the 17th over, but Raina bang, bang, getting two fours and a six. A 16-run over from Coulter-Nile could have turned the match decidedly in GL's favour. But cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties, you know!

  • 23:39 (IST)

Needing less than six per over with five wickets in hand, the equation looks pretty simple for GL now.

  • 23:39 (IST)

    After 17 overs,Gujarat Lions 171/5 ( Suresh Raina (C) 77 , Ravindra Jadeja 13)

Nathan Coulter-Nile back into the attack, and Gambhir will be desperate for Raina's wicket, with the Lions appearing to run away with the game right now. FOUR! Raina hammers the first ball down the ground to further reduce the equation, and squeezes the third ball towards backward point for the second boundary of the over. SIX! Full along middle and leg, and Raina flicks this one towards the deep square-leg boundary! Quick single off the last ball, with Jadeja retaining the strike.

Gujarat Lions need 17 to win from 18 balls.

  • 23:38 (IST)

  • 23:34 (IST)

    After 16 overs,Gujarat Lions 155/5 ( Suresh Raina (C) 62 , Ravindra Jadeja 12)

Narine into his final over, and keeps it tight till the penultimate delivery of the over. Jadeja, looking for a couple of big hits of his own, slogs towards the wide long-on boundary. Suryakumar, standing near the boundary rope, loses his balance, and still has the ball in his grasp when he steps on the rope. Tried to throw the ball back inside, though he eventually admits it being a six.

Gujarat Lions need 33 to win from 24 balls.

  • 23:33 (IST)

    Most 50-plus scores in IPL:

    36 - David Warner
    33 - Gautam Gambhir
    32 - Virat Kohli
    31 - SURESH RAINA*
    30 - Rohit Sharma

  • 23:30 (IST)

    After 15 overs,Gujarat Lions 146/5 ( Suresh Raina (C) 61 , Ravindra Jadeja 4)

Umesh into his second over. Raina whacks the first ball after getting to his half-century with a pull towards midwicket. Nearly plays on yet again in the fourth ball, with the ball bouncing over the stumps. Steers the fifth ball through backward point to collect his seventh boundary. With Raina still at the crease, Gujarat still has a chance.

Gujarat Lions need 42 to win from 30 balls.

  • 23:26 (IST)

    After 14 overs,Gujarat Lions 133/5 ( Suresh Raina (C) 50 , Ravindra Jadeja 3)

Luck favours Raina in this over after he nearly gets an inside-edge onto his leg-stump in the penultiate delivery, though it ends up travelling to the fine-leg boundary. Gets a single off the last ball not only to keep the strike, but get to the half-century for the 30th time in the IPL.

Gujarat Lions need 55 to win from 36 balls.

  • 23:24 (IST)

Fifty for Suresh Raina! The Gujarat Lions captain gets to the milestone in his 32nd delivery, having hit six fours and a six in the innings so far, and now stands between KKR and a victory.

  • 23:21 (IST)

    After 13 overs,Gujarat Lions 124/5 ( Suresh Raina (C) 43 , Ravindra Jadeja 1)

Umesh Yadav is finally introduced into the attack in the 13th over of the innings (how often does that happen?). The ploy to hold him back works wonderfully however, he gets rid of a batsman as dangerous as Dwayne Smith, beating him with pace. Just five runs and a wicket for the Vidarbha pacer.

Gujarat Lions need 64 to win from 42 balls.

  • 23:20 (IST)

Suresh Raina has gone past Rohit Sharma's record of scoring most runs against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL. Rohit Sharma has scored 657 runs from 19 matches at an average of 50.54 against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL.

  • 23:18 (IST)

How KKR bowls these middle overs is important and they have the crafty Kuldeep bowling. A brilliant first over from him conceding only three runs and now, he gets rid of Ishan Kishan. The mystique of Chinaman bowling can be overwhelming for any batting side, and Gambhir has done well to have him bowling during the middle period, between 10 and 15 overs. The wickets have pegged back the Lions. And to salt to injury, Umesh gets rid of Dwayne Smith. KKR continue to keep chipping away. They have brought the match back in their favour now. Good decision to hold back Umesh for the middle overs.

  • 23:17 (IST)

BOWLED EM! Umesh strikes in his very first over, and he castles Dwayne Smith, who got beaten by pace, getting a bat/pad deflection onto his leg-stump. GL 122/5

    Dwayne Smith b Umesh 5(4)

  • 23:15 (IST)

    After 12 overs,Gujarat Lions 119/4 ( Suresh Raina (C) 40 , Dwayne Smith 4)

FOUR! Deft touch towards third man by Raina, and some bizarre work by Narine inside the circle — trying to stop it with his right foot, and failing quite hilariously — results in Raina's fifth boundary. Kuldeep one full and along middle, which Kishan tries sweeping on one knee towards the leg side, but ends up holing to Umesh at deep square-leg. Dwayne Smith walks out to bat, and gets off the mark first ball with a slog sweep for a four. 9 runs and a wicket off the 12th.

Gujarat Lions need 69 to win from 48 balls.

  • 23:11 (IST)

OUT! Now it is Ishan Kishan's turn to head back to the dugout, sweeping a full delivery from Kuldeep straight to Umesh at deep square-leg! GL 115/4

  • 23:09 (IST)

    After 11 overs,Gujarat Lions 110/3 ( Suresh Raina (C) 35 , Ishan Kishan 4)

Narine into his third over. Raina gets down on one knee, and goes for his preferred shot — the inside-out loft — to send the ball flying towards the extra-cover boundary. Fine shot in the fifth delivery, picking the back-of-length ball outside leg, and pulls it towards the backward square-leg boundary.

  • 23:07 (IST)

    After 10 overs,Gujarat Lions 99/3 ( Suresh Raina (C) 25 , Ishan Kishan 3)

Kuldeep Yadav into the attack in the 10th over, and bowls a superb over just when KKR are starting to gain momentum in the innings. Gives away just three off the over. The fifth ball of the over is an absolute peach that just about beats Kishan's outside edge.

  • 23:01 (IST)

    After 9 overs,Gujarat Lions 96/3 ( Suresh Raina (C) 23 , Ishan Kishan 2)

Four and a six for Raina to start the new over with. Goes inside-out in the first ball, clearing the extra-cover boundary, before hooking a short ball past Yusuf Pathan's fingers at fine-leg next delivery. Three singles scored in the remainder of the over, with 13 coming off it. And the umpire signals for the first timeout of the Gujarat innings (do the sides really need it though?).

  • 22:58 (IST)

    After 8 overs,Gujarat Lions 83/3 ( Suresh Raina (C) 11 , Ishan Kishan 1)

Well-timed flick down towards long-on by Karthik, who got off the mark with a single in the previous over, to collect a couple of runs. Gets a leading edge next delivery that travels straight to Gambhir at cover, departing for a lowly 3. Ishan Kishan, the new batsman, walks out to bat, and starts off with a single. Just four off the over, along with the wicket.

  • 22:57 (IST)

All the three bowlers used by KKR before Woakes had gone for over 1o runs per over. But a fine first over by Woakes. Beautiful changes of pace, and a massive blow to GL, with McCullum caught at sweeper cover trying to go all the way into the stands. And now Coulter-Nile comes back to get rid of Karthik. Another big wicket. The rain break seems to have worked in KKR's favour. Still, GL have a lot in their tank remaining and Ravindra Jadeja slated to come in at eight, they bat really deep. The good thing for KKR is that the have stopped the flow of runs, and pulled things back a bit.

  • 22:56 (IST)

Having been well placed to win this game at the rain break these two quick wickets have now put the Lions on the back foot. They now need Dwayne Smith to come to the middle with the innings already a long way finished and score runs at the death. But before that Ishan Kishan needs to get somewhere close to the career best 39 he made against RCB in the last match.

  • 22:52 (IST)

OUT! Nathan Coulter-Nile strikes this time, and it is Dinesh Karthik who walks back after getting a leading edge off a rising delivery that travels straight to Gambhir at cover. GL 81/3

    Dinesh Karthik c Gambhir b Coulter-Nile 3(3)

  • 22:50 (IST)

    After 7 overs,Gujarat Lions 79/2 ( Suresh Raina (C) 10 , Dinesh Karthik (W) 1)

Woakes introduced into the attack in the seventh over of the innings. Starts off with a full delivery to Raina that he hits down the ground, before McCUllum carves the second ball over cover, only to get caught by Manish Pandey near the boundary. Tried to use all his power to smash the full delivery along the middle stump, but did not hit it from the sweet spot of the bat. Raina ends the over bny whacking the ball past backward point.

  • 22:46 (IST)

OUT! McCullum looks to carve a full delivery along the middle-stump towards the off-side, but doesn't quite get the distance as he gets caught by Manish Pandey at deep cover! GL 73/2

    Brendon McCullum c Pandey b Woakes 33(17)

  • 22:45 (IST)

    After 6 overs,Gujarat Lions 72/1 ( Brendon McCullum 33 , Suresh Raina (C) 4)

Shakib bowls his third over, with Gujarat Lions getting off to a rapid start before the rain interruption. McCullum sweeps the fourth delivery of the over towards the backward square-leg boundary to bring up his fifth boundary. 10 off the over, with BMac and Raina dealing in ones and twos in the rest of the over. This is GL's highest-ever powerplay score.

  • 22:40 (IST)

NOTE — No overs have been deducted fromm the Gujarat Lions innings, and the visitors' target still remains the same.

  • 22:38 (IST)

We are back underway shortly, and the Lions will be feeling very happy. They are 21 runs ahead of the Duckworth/Lewis/Stern par score and have the batting that should make this type of chase straightforward. The big threat for KKR is Sunil Narine and they have already managed to take 22 runs off his first two overs. This should be win number two for the Lions now, but as ever a lot rests on how well Brendon McCullum does.

  • 22:38 (IST)

The players are back on the field right now. Play to begin any moment now.

  • 22:33 (IST)

The covers are off at the Eden Gardens, and play will resume at 10.40 pm.

  • 22:25 (IST)

  • 22:25 (IST)

  • 22:14 (IST)

Just when Shakib was about to bowl his third over, play gets stopped due to a drizzle, with the covers coming out at the moment. The first stoppage due to rain in the ongoing tournament. Well Gambhir appears quite serious (or Gambhir) at the moment, and that is because Gujarat Lions are 21 runs ahead of the par score at the moment.

Other than that, and the torrent of boundaries all over the ground, we see quite a few plastic bags fly around.

  • 22:12 (IST)

    After 5 overs,Gujarat Lions 62/1 ( Brendon McCullum 27 , Suresh Raina (C) 2)

Narine back into the attack after getting hammered for 16 in his first. Skipper Raina, the new batsman at the crease, gets off the mark with a single in his first ball. Dropped chance in the third ball, after faint edge off the skipper's bat deflects off the keeper's glove. McCullum miscues length ball in the fifth delivery, though the ball lands safely between cover and extra-cover and nearly ends up becoming a four. Coulter-Nile dives to save a couple of runs near the boundary rope, and grabs his shoulder in pain, though it is not as serious as that of Chris Lynn. Six off the over.

  • 22:07 (IST)

    After 4 overs,Gujarat Lions 56/1 ( Brendon McCullum 23 , Suresh Raina (C) 0)

Spin makes way for pace in this over, with Nathan Coulter-Nile getting introduced into the attack. And he concedes a front-foot no-ball in the second ball of the over. Finch, facing the free-hit, fails to connect in the free-hit, with the ball missing his inside-edge by a whisker. Finch holes out to backward square-leg in the next ball, getting a top-edge off a bouncer. McCullum makes room for a powerful cut in the fourth ball, getting his third boundary, before going for a pull off a short ball that carries all the way past the midwicket boundary, bringing up the team 50 in just 3.5 overs. Ends the over by steering a full, wide delivery towards the vacant backward point region.

  • 22:07 (IST)

McCullum and Finch have given Gujarat exactly the start they needed chasing a stiff target. Change of pace is going to be the key for KKR one feels and Coulter-Nile and Woakes have to take the lead in this. Coulter-Nile has started well foxing Finch with a slower bouncer to prevent damage off the free hit and then has him caught at fine leg with a bouncer bowled much faster. Baz is unfazed though and gets four, six and four off the last three balls of that over.

  • 22:03 (IST)

OUT! Slow bouncer from Coulter-Nile does the trick for KKR, with Finch getting a top-edge towards backward square-leg to depart for 31; GL 42/1

  • 21:59 (IST)

    After 3 overs,Gujarat Lions 40/0 ( Aaron Finch 31 , Brendon McCullum 8)

Shakib continues from the other end, and appeals for an lbw in the second ball of the over, though it appears to be missing leg. Finch decides to target the long-on region in the third and fifth balls of the over with a couple of well-timed on-drives, and smashing the last ball of the over down the ground with a mighty hit! Gujarat's start so far is hardly any different from that of KKR.

Preview: Revenge will be on their minds when wooden spooners Gujarat Lions take on table toppers Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a return Indian Premier League (IPL) fixture at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Friday.

The Suresh-Raina led franchise – in both the outfit's first games of the season – suffered a 10-wicket defeat in their own den on 7 April.

KKR openers Gautam Gambhir (76 off 48) and Chris Lynn (93 off 41) made short work of Gujarat's 183 while Raina top-scored with an unbeaten 68.

Since then, both sides have treaded different paths with the men in purple recording four victories and just one loss out of their five engagements so far, and Gujarat facing four reversals and just one win to show for.

Against Rising Pune Supergiant, Gujarat's Australian medium pacer Andrew Tye bagged a hat-trick an returned best figures of 5/17 as Gujarat won by seven wickets with two overs to spare.

Ace India left-arm orthodox spinner Ravindra Jadeja played for the first time in that match but could not reap much dividends picking up just one wicket and going for 40 runs too.

Since then, the side formed in 2016 finished second-best against Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore, their bowlers failing to live up to the ocassion on both counts.

Jadeja went wicketless, leaking 57 runs against RCB in his quota of four overs.

Chris Gayle was at his lethal best as he plundered a 38-ball 77 to help Virat Kohli's team post a mammoth 213. Gujarat batsmen fought hard with Brendon McCullum smashing a 44-ball 72 but in the end fell 21 runs short.

Against defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad too, Gujarat succumbed to a tame defeat in the second game of the campaign.

The good part for Friday's visitors is McCullum's form with the willow. The dashing Kiwi batsman has scored 225 runs in five games at an average of 45.

Coming to the home team, the two-time IPL champions showed exemplary character during their nail-biting four-wicket win against Delhi Daredevils with one ball remaining.

Being in the dumps while chasing 169 to win, Manish Pandey (69 not out) and Yusuf Pathan (59) stemmed the rot doggedly with a 110-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Since that four-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians in their second outing, the Gautam Gambhir-led franchise has not looked back, scripting a hat-trick of wins. Besides Gambhir looking rock solid at the top of the order (196 runs in five matches), Pandey has been in outstanding form, amassing 221 from his four essays at a staggering average of 221.

Pathan getting among runs should also be a cause of joy for KKR. What remains to be seen is who opens the batting with Gambhir.

After Lynn got injured, Sunil Narine and Colin de Grandhomme have been given chances to win the Powerplay which has been the core of the thinktank's plan.

In the bowling department, Narine has been the most economical among bowlers who have played five matches so far this season.

The teams met twice last season with Gujarat winning on both occasions.
