Kashyap eyes another good show at Singapore Open

Jun 19, 2012

Brimming with confidence after a good performance in the Indonesia last week, Olympic-bound Indian shuttler P Kashyap will look to continue his giant-killing run when he starts his campaign at the Singapore Open Super Series tomorrow.

Kashyap stunned world number three Chinese Chen Long en route to his semifinal finish at the Indonesia Open Super Series Premier in Jakarta last week. He will start his campaign against second seed Korean Hyun Il Lee in men’s singles in Singapore city.

The world number 26 Kashyap holds a 1-1 record against the eighth ranked Korean. Kashyap would look to take confidence from his straight-game victory in their last encounter at the Badminton Asia Thomas Cup preliminaries in February this year.

Olympic-bound women’s doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa also will look to do well in the Singapore Open, which is their last tournament before the London Olympics in July. The duo will take on local pair of Jiayuan Chen and Juan Gu tomorrow.

Jwala will also pair up with V Diju and the sixth seeded Olympic-bound Indian combo will take on Indonesian pair of Markis Kido and Pia Zebadiah Bernadeth.

Among other Indians, world number 23 Ajay Jayaram will meet Brice Leverdez of France, while Anand Pawar will lock horns with Kevin Cordon of Guatemala.

National champion Sourabh Varma will face off Hong Kong’s Yun Hu, while RMV Gurusaidutt will be up against Zi Liang Derek Wong of Singapore. In the women’s singles, P V Sindhu will meet Xiao Jia Chen at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The men’s doubles pair of Tarun Kona and Arun Vishnu will take on Malaysian Thien How Hoon and Wee Kiong Tan. Tarun will also combine with Ashwini to face Noriyasu Hirata and Miyuki Maeda of japan in the mixed doubles competition.
