As it happened: Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings

by May 6, 2012

Mumbai -174-8 – after 20 overs
Smith 24, Singh 1

The late surge of wickets did not stop Smith from doing the unthinkable. Two fours and a six in the last ball ensures Mumbai win an epic battle in the last ball. Smith is a hero to finish it in a style. What a stunning end to close a game which went down to the wire. This is what the IPL is all about.

Mumbai -159-8 – after 19.2 overs
Harbhajan Singh c sub (WP Saha) b Bravo 0 (1b, 0×4, 0×6); SL Malinga b Hilfenhaus 0 (1b, 0×4, 0×6)

The skipper goes now. Harbhajan is caught and Mumbai is collapsing.

Mumbai -151-6 – after 18.3 overs
RJ Peterson run out 0 (2b, 0×4, 0×6)

Peterson’s gone now. Faf doing some great work in the field to run him out.

Mumbai -149-5 – after 18 overs
KD Karthik b Bravo 11 (5b, 2×4, 0×6); AT Rayudu b Jadeja 0 (2b, 0×4, 0×6) ; RG Sharma b Jadeja 60 (46b, 6×4, 2×6)

Karthik, Rayadu and Sharma are all bowled as the game has suddenly turned on its heels. Jadeja takes two before Bravo had plucked Karthik’s stump. Suddenly, and in a typical IPL way, the match has taken an unseen twist.

Mumbai -134-2 – after 15.5 overs
SR Tendulkar c du Plessis b Ashwin 74 (44b, 11×4, 1×6)

That’s the end of Sachin. It needed something brilliant to break the partnership and Faf provides it. A stunning attempt at a catch comes off as the ball sticks to faf’s palms to dismiss the legend.

Mumbai 106-1 – after 13 overs
Tendulkar 56  , Sharma 47

Sharma striking two terrific fours and a six, Mumbai is building up more hopes to beat Chennai. Tendulkar taking it at ease with a run at a time.

Mumbai 74-1 – after 10  overs
Tendulkar 39 , Sharma 33

Tendulkar and Sharma still sticking up taking single runs ending up with slow overs! After Ashwin and Bravo, its Jakati on the field to bowl. A good sign for CSK.

Mumbai 61-1 – after 8 overs
Tendulkar 31 , Sharma 29

After a mind blowing series of fours and six by the duo, they have slowed down with a run a ball. Sharma is playing really well to match Tendulkar’s pace.

Mumbai 38-1 – after 5 overs
Tendulkar 20 , Sharma 17

A wonderful partnership between Tendulkar and Sharma brings an excellent start for Mumbai.  Tendulkar has three fours in five balls and Sharma adds it up to two fours and a six. Good Going Mumbai..!

Mumbai 14-1 – after 2.2 overs
JEC Franklin c Vijay b Hilfenhaus 1 (9b, 0×4, 0×6)

Franklin buckles under pressure and drives straight to mid on. Mumbai need some boundaries and save their wickets.

Mumbai come out to bat

Chennai 173-8 after 20 overs

RA Jadeja c Franklin b Malinga 9 (6b, 0×4, 1×6);  R Ashwin c Harbhajan Singh b Malinga 0 (1b, 0×4, 0×6)

Jadeja tries to whip it past point but its taken sharply. Ashwin tries to finish it in style but his slog straight to midwicket. CSK lost wickets in quick succession at the end but 173 is a good score to defend. Mumbai have a challenge waiting for them.

Chennai 169-6 after 18.6 overs

JA Morkel b Singh 3 (3b, 0×4, 0×6)

Morkel missed it by allowing the ball directly into the stumps. RP sing followed him with a yorker.

Chennai 158-4 after 18.3 overs
MS Dhoni c Sharma b Singh 25 (15b, 2×4, 1×6)

Dhoni attempts a six but, the elevation is not enough to clear the fielder. Its not quite a captain’s innings but he did not fail to entertain.

Chennai 158-4 after 17.7 overs
DJ Bravo b Malinga 40 (33b, 4×4, 1×6)

Bravo smashes Malinga two boundaries in a row. Then, Malinga gets his revenge by taking out his leg-stumps with a typical yorker

Chennai 114-3 after 14.1 overs

SK Raina c Singh b Franklin 36 (21b, 3×4, 2×6)

Raina lashes out at a delivery but RP is there to pull off a stunning catch. Brilliant stuff from the fielder. Solid innings from Raina.

Chennai 106-2 after 13 overs
Raina 34, Bravo 15

Raina has smashed a couple of sixes and a four in the last three overs and Bravo also contributes with a well timed four. CSK are suddenly looking good as the partnership is flourishing.

Chennai 72-2 after 10 overs
Raina 8, Bravo 9

There have been only two boundaries since Vijay’s wicket fell. Bravo scores one four through the covers before Raina pulls one through square leg. At this run rate CSK might need to accelerate a bit.

 Chennai 52-2 after 6.4 overs
M Vijay b Singh 41 (29b, 4×4, 3×6)

Vijay loses his wicket while attempting to hit one over mid-wicket. He misses the shot and the ball has found the gap between bat and pad. Down goes the off-stump. Great over from RP.

Dhoni's men will be aiming for third position in the IPL table. AFP

Chennai 47-1 after 5.2 overs
F du Plessis run out 9 (11b, 0×4, 0×6)

The batsmen want a quick single and it was looking like they would get it, but for Vijay to change his mind mid-way through the run. Faf had no chance if it was a direct hit…and it was! First wicket for Mumbai.

Chennai 22-0 after 4 overs
Vijay 14, Du Plessis 7

Du Plessis dropped at short fine-leg as RP Singh looked as if he was just not ready for the batsman’s high glance to come towards him. That could be a costly one for Mumbai. Two boundary-less overs for CSK could mean the batsmen are ready to take some risks now.

Chennai 15-0 after 2 overs
Vijay 14, Du Plessis 0

Vijay starts off confidently, which he usually does, and dispatches a boundary through the off side. His next four runs come off an inside edge which just misses the stumps and finds its way to the ropes.
