WICKET! Mumbai 149-9 after 20 overs
Lasith Malinga b Jadeja 17 (16b, 1×4, 1×6)
Two fours and a six in the last couple of overs, but it was never going to be enough for Mumbai to get to the finish line. They have fallen short of 38 runs. Malinga lost his wicket in the last over but it did not matter. CSK have won this match by 38 runs and will meet Delhi Daredevils in the 2nd qualifier. Kolkata Knight Riders await the winner of that match.
WICKET! Mumbai 129-8 after 18 overs
Kieron Pollard c Raina b Bravo 16 (19b, 1×4, 1×6)
Mumbai’s last hope of winning the match is now sitting in the dug out. Pollard tries to smack one over the fielders, but has been taken by Raina in the deep. Bravo bravely signals Pollard to take the next flight home.
Mumbai 117-7 after 16 overs
Pollard 13, Malinga 1
One must surely be forgiven to think that this game is already over. Of course, there’s Pollard at the crease and with T20 cricket, you can never say. But mathematically, the game is slowly inching away from Mumbai.
WICKET! Mumbai 103-7 after 14.2 overs
Harbhajan Singh c Raina b Hilfenhaus 1 (4b, 0×4, 0×6)
What a fine catch from Raina! Harbhajan’s high shot is behind him but he runs backwards, keeps his eyes on the ball and collects while stretching over his head. Harbhajan shakes his head… the end is nearing.
WICKET! Mumbai 102-6 after 13.3 overs
James Franklin c Dhoni b Bravo 13 (13b, 0×4, 1×6)
Has this wicket brought the end of Mumbai’s chances to win this match? Franklin tries to pull it away and a slight inside edge carries to Dhoni.
WICKET! Mumbai 96-5 after 11.5 overs
Ambati Rayudu c Vijay b Ashwin 11 (7b, 2×4, 0×6)
Mumbai stuttering now. Rayadu slow sweeps and is taken on the ropes by Vijay who breaks into a jig of his own. On the other end, Franklin is trying his best to score some runs… his latest six over mid-wicket will help that cause.
WICKET! Mumbai 77-4 after 10.1 overs
Rohit Sharma c Dhoni b Morkel 14 (19b, 0×4, 0×6)
Who know what would have happened if Tendulkar and Smith had not gone through that horrible mix-up? But as it stands, Sharma is gone too… Morkel invites him down the track, the batsmen heaves, edges it and it’s taken nicely by Dhoni.
WICKET! Mumbai 68-3 after 8.1 overs
Dinesh Karthik c Dhoni b Morkel 6 (4b, 1×4, 0×6)
Lovely delivery from Morkel… he invites a defensive drive from Karthik, the ball moves away and the edge is taken by Dhoni. Mumbai’s good start has turned into a fragile run chase.
WICKET! Mumbai 55-2 after 6.2 overs
Dwayne Smith c Jadeja b Jakati 38 (22b, 5×4, 2×6)
It was a fine innings, but it could have been so much more! Smith goes for the big shot and he is taken at point. He will surely ask himself whether Tendulkar’s sacrifice came to nothing.
WICKET! Mumbai 47-1 after 5 overs
Sachin Tendulkar run out 11 (11b, 2×4, 0×6)
Tell you what! Confusion broke out as Smith thought it was a run but Sachin was never looking at his partner. Smith had crossed over and the Indian legend walks out of the crease to ensure he walks— to keep Smith at the crease. Pure class.
It was sensational batting from these two. What this fine start will do is take the last minute nerves away from those who are at the crease after 15 overs. Smith has smashed Hilfenhaus for a couple of fours and a six before Tendulkar shows his class by steering Jakati for a fine cut-shot past point before losing his wicket.
Mumbai 20-0 after 2 overs
Smith 17, Tendulkar 1
Smith looks like he wants to continue where he left his innings against Rajasthan. He has scored Mumbai’s first six with a top edge over the keeper but his two fours were not that lucky. Instead he has executed them finely through the gaps.
Mumbai come out to bat and are chasing a target of 188 runs
CSK 141-5 after 20 overs
Dhoni 32, Bravo 7
Dhoni has put up a great show tonight! He attacked the ball from the moment he came to bat and CSK really needed that. He has plundered the bowlers all over the park but the highlight was certainly the helicopter shot dug out from a Malinga yorker which flew away for a six. He deserves his half century—which took only 20 balls to score.
The final over saw two huge sixes from Bravo and it is almost unbelievable that CSK have managed to score 187 runs after the sort of start they made.
CSK 187-5 after 17 overs
Dhoni 32, Bravo 7
Dhoni is hammering the bowlers all over the park as CSK look to make these last few overs count. He has clobbered four fours in the last two overs as Bravo tries to adjust himself with a well executed glance past fine-leg for four more.
WICKET! CSK 115-5 after 15.1 overs
Ravindra Jadeja c Sharma b Kulkarni 1 (2b, 0×4, 0×6)
What a catch from Sharma! He runs backwards, keeps his eye on the ball and collects it with ease. He makes it look easy but that one was really hard… Jadeja is undone with his attempt to slog.
WICKET! CSK 106-4 after 14.2 overs
Michael Hussey c Kulkarni b Franklin 49 (39b, 8×4, 1×6)
Hussey sees a loose full-toss come towards him and he flicks it away… high and towards deep square-leg. But Kulkarni is on the edge of the ropes and takes a fine catch.
WICKET! CSK 95-3 after 13.2 overs
S Badrinath c Sharma b Pollard 47 (39b, 6×4, 1×6)
Badrinathi knows things need to be hastened, but his attempt at haste makes waste as he cannot get enough bat on his big shot. Rohit Sharma takes the catch in the deep.
CSK 82-2 after 12 overs
Hussey 33, Badrinath 45
After a really bad over from Harbhajan, which got hit for two sixes and a four, Malinga saves his captain’s face with a lovely over which goes for only two runs.
CSK 61-2 after 10 overs
Hussey 22, Badrinath 36
Well, a flurry of boundaries in the 10th over takes CSK to 61 runs from 10 overs. The run-rate is just 6.10/over, something that needs a remarkable upheaval to put up a batter total. Badrinath looks pretty good at the crease, smashing three fours in the last two overs.
CSK 41-2 after 8 overs
Hussey 17, Badrinath 22
It is more about saving their wickets for CSK, so that they can accelerate later on. The two batsmen taking a ‘no-silly-shots’ approach. Badrinath has cracked a four past fine-leg but that is the only highlight in the last 12 balls.
CSK 30-2 after 6 overs
Hussey 15, Badrinath 13
Hussey finally gets going with three fours in the last two overs. He edges the first one towards third-man, slaps one past the covers and beautifully caressing one through the same region. The runs are still not as much as what CSK would like, but Mumbai’s fielding has been pretty sharp as of now.
CSK 14-2 after 4 overs
Hussey 1, Badrinath 11
Two quick boundaries from Badrinath have enabled CSK fans to cheer a bit. But Mumbai have kept things incredibly tight at the moment.
WICKETS! CSK 1-2 after 1.2 overs
Murali Vijay c Sharma b Kulkarni 1 (5b, 0×4, 0×6)
Suresh Raina b Kulkarni 0 (1b, 0×4, 0×6)
Kulkarni strikes on his first delivery! Vijay drives at an out swinging delivery and gets and edge to first slip. On the very next ball, Raina attempts to steer it towards the offside and the inside edge diverts the ball right onto the stumps.
CSK 1-0 after 1 over
Vijay 1, Hussey 0
Harbhajan opens the bowling for Mumbai. It has been a tight over from the skipper, who gives away just a single in the process.
