As it happened: Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders

by May 16, 2012

WICKET! Mumbai 108 all out after 19.1 overs
RP Singh c Iqbal Abdulla b Narine 3 (5b, 0×4, 0×6)

Mumbai Indians done and dusted. Narine gets his fourth wicket of the match as a helmet-less RP Singh heaves one straight to long-on. Easy catch and a massive victory for KKR.

WICKET! Mumbai 108-9 after 19 overs
Lasith Malinga c Tiwary b Balaji 8 (6b, 0×4, 1×6)

Malinga clubs one towards the long-on fence and Tiwary is more than grateful to collect.

WICKET! Mumbai 104-8 after 17.5 overs
Rohit Sharma c McCullum b Narine 12 (14b, 1×4, 0×6)

Sharma, Mumbai’s lingering hope, has now faded away with a top edge which is taken by a diving McCullum. Narine already has figures of 3/15 in three overs.

WICKET! Mumbai 97-7 after 17.1 overs
Harbhajan Singh c Tiwary b Narine 1 (2b, 0×4, 0×6)

The great collapse. Mumbai Indians are surely down and out after this wicket? Narine’s delivery looks juicy, but it’s all a trick as Harbhajan goes for the big one and only finds long-on.

WICKETS! Mumbai 96-6 after 16.5 overs
Kieron Pollard c McCullum b Kallis 8 (5b, 1×4, 0×6)
Dwayne Smith lbw b Kallis 0 (1b, 0×4, 0×6)

Kallis was earlier victim of RP Singh’s back-to-back wickets and he gets the perfect vengeance. Pollard’s hook takes an edge and McCullum collects with ease before the South African dismisses Smith for LBW.

WICKET! Mumbai 83-4 after 15.3 overs
Ambati Rayudu st McCullum b Shakib Al Hasan 11 (8b, 0×4, 1×6)

Rayadu charged down the track and Al Hasan realises his intentions, bowls outside the off-stump and the keeper takes the stumps off in time.

WICKET! Mumbai 66-3 after 12.5 overs
Karthik c Pathan b Balaji 20 (26b, 3×4, 0×6)

It’s as easy as it gets for Yousuf Pathan at fine-leg. Karthik pulls a short delivery and it goes straight to him. Mumbai are in a wee bit of trouble now.

WICKET! Mumbai 60-2 after 11 overs
Sachin Tendulkar b Narine 27 (24b, 3×4, 1×6)

What a beautiful delivery from Narine! He bowls the one that nips back in rather than away from the batsman, and Sachin, on his back-foot has no idea what has come his way. It takes the top of his pad before dancing onto the bails.

Kolkata will jump to second position with a win tonight. AFP

Mumbai 52-1 after 9 overs
Tendulkar 26, Kartik 11

The runs are flowing now, and after his initial scare, Tendulkar seems to be in the mood for some boundaries. He shows his class by diverting a delivery over the keeper’s head for six before swatting away a four. Kartik has already started with the hits, registering a couple of fours before settling down to give strike to Tendulkar.

WICKET! Mumbai 26-1 after 6 overs
Herschelle Gibbs lbw b Iqbal Abdulla 13 (24b, 1×4, 0×6)

Abdulla invites the sweep from Gibbs and he takes the bait and misses. The ball thumps his pads and the umpire raises the finger, undeterred by Gibbs’s protests.

Mumbai 20-0 after 5 overs
Tendulkar 6, Gibbs 12

Tendulkar gets his first four of the innings, finding the gap at covers and whacking one off the back-foot. Some sloppy fielding gives Mumbai another five runs after an overthrow went through the backing-up fielders legs.

Mumbai 7-0 after 2 overs
Tendulkar 0, Gibbs 5

Gibbs has smacked a boundary on just the second delivery and Tendulkar looks pretty troubled on the other end. It’s a huge shout as Al Hasan asks for the LBW. It was pretty close too but it’s gone in the favour of Sachin.

Mumbai come out to bat

KKR 140-7 after 20 overs
Pathan 21, Narine 9

Somehow, KKR have managed a couple of fours in the last two overs and they are not even off Yusuf’s bat. Narine the spinner has dispatched them to take KKR to 140 runs. Mumbai should look forward to this, but the pitch is aiding the bowlers and they will need to be careful.

WICKET! KKR 125-7 after 18.1 overs
Rajat Bhatia c Karthik b Malinga 12 (7b, 2×4, 0×6)

Bhatia heaves one into the air. It’s the slower delivery from Malinga and just as RP was going for the take, Kartik dives in with his gloves out to collect. My my…

KKR 125-6 after 18 overs
Pathan 18, Bhatia 12

Yusuf Pathan survived by a fraction of an inch as his slog is taken in the field but the umpire, aided with the TV replay, gives a no-ball. There have been three boundaries in the last couple of overs and keeping Pathan at the crease is vital.

WICKET! KKR 96-6 after 15.4 overs
Debabrata Das run out 2 (3b, 0×4, 0×6)

KKR are sliding now. Yusuf hooks and Das is off in a jiffy, but there was never a run and the latter is not even in the frame when the bails are plucked to run him out.

WICKET! KKR 91-5 after 14.1 overs
Manoj Tiwary c Malinga b Patel 41 (43b, 2×4, 2×6)

Tiwary has had a good innings, but it isn’t quick enough for this format of the game. He wants to improve that and tries to hit one over the bowler’s head, instead miss-timing it to Malinga at long-off.

WICKET! KKR 89-4 after 13.2 overs
Shakib Al Hasan b Smith 13 (12b, 1×4, 0×6)

Al Hasan getting impatient and aiming a slog, but he can only get an inside edge straight onto his own stumps.

KKR 64-3 after 11 overs
Tiwary 26, Al Hasan 5

Tiwary ends the boundary misery for KKR with two back to back fours. The first one is a lucky inside edge, but the other one is thwacked away over mid-off.

WICKET! KKR 44-3 after 8.3 overs
Gautam Gambhir b Pollard 28 (23b, 3×4, 1×6)

Pollard tries a slower delivery and it has worked for him. The added bonus is that it’s Gambhir that loses his wicket to a clever piece of bowling. Mumbai are happy… they know what this means for them.

KKR 38-2 after 7 overs
Gambhir 25, Tiwary 10

After evading the early dangers from RP Singh and Malinga, Gambhir and Tiwary have settled down. But it comes at a prince, because they have scored almost no boundaries in these last three overs. That means Mumbai have done brilliantly to keep the score so low despite the powerplay.

KKR 22-2 after 4 overs
Gambhir 17, Tiwary 3

RP Singh was doing everything right and it was about to get better when Sachin Tendulkar ran towards his upper-cut aimed at third-man. But the little master can’t collect it and it hits his palm and goes over the ropes for six. He’s looking at that injured finger again.

WICKETS! KKR 6-2 after 1.2 overs
Brendon McCullum lbw b Singh 1 (5b, 0×4, 0×6)
Jacques Kallis b Singh (1b, 0×4, 0×6)

McCullum is miles ahead of the crease when the ball hits his pads, but the umpire raises the finger to send him back to the crease with his head shaking. Singh then cleans up Kallis’s off-stump… and the Mumbai fans erupt like never before.
