BCCI completes probe into IPL spot-fixing allegations

New Delhi: A former police officer appointed to probe IPL spot-fixing today submitted his report to BCCI without getting any access to S Sreesanth and two other players of Rajasthan Royals arrested by Delhi Police a fortnight ago. BCCI had appointed R N Sawani, a former IPS officer who probed the 2000 match-fixing case, to go into the spot-fixing issue and submit his report to the Cricket Board. Reuters[/caption] Sawani was entrusted with the task of examining in detail charges levelled by Delhi Police against the three players as also scrutinising the three IPL matches listed by it, official sources said. However, the BCCI-appointed one-man probe team could not question the three players – Sreesanth and Ajay Chandalia as they were in judicial custody whereas Ankeet Chavan was out on bail for his marriage. BCCI had got in touch with the Delhi Police requesting them to allow examination of the players and sharing of the evidence against them. All the three players have been suspended pending an inquiry. BCCI had given 15-day timeline to Sawani to complete his probe. According to sources, Delhi Police shared some basic details about the case which included how they stumbled on spot-fixing and alleged involvement of the players and their subsequent negotiations. Special cell of the Delhi police had arrested Sreesanth, Chandila and Chavan – along with bookies after their team’s IPL match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai on May 16. The cricketers and bookies have been booked under the stringent MCOCA. They also face charges under sections 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code. PTI
