Shikhar Dhawan was chosen as skipper and Darren Sammy vice-captain of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, the IPL side announced today.
The Indian Premier League's seventh edition starts on 16 April and the Sunrisers will be hoping to do better than last time — when they reached the playoffs before eventually losing to Rajasthan Royals.
"Dhawan with his significant contribution as a batsman in the previous season has retained his position in the team not just as a crucial opener in the batting order but as the appropriate choice to extend his captaincy role in Champions League to the upcoming IPL as well," a press release said.
Dhawan and Sammy were integral to the Sunrisers' fantastic run in their debut season. Dhawan was top-scorer with 311 runs at an average of 38.87 and a strike-rate of 122.92. Sammy scored 174 runs at an average of 29.00 and a strike-rate of 131.81. He also took eight wickets at an average of 21.00.
"Sammy’s experience in the sport as an all-rounder, as West Indies captain of the ongoing T20 World cricket and his consecutive association with the franchise promises to lead the players as a team all the way up to the playoffs as in the previous season," the release added.
