IPL 9, RPS vs RCB as it happened: Kohli trumps Dhoni, Bangalore post 13-run win

Apr, 22 2016 IST

  • 23:58 (IST)

That's it from us at Firstpost. Do tune in tomorrow for Delhi Daredevils vs Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Kings XI Punjab. Till then. good night!

  • 23:57 (IST)

AB de Villiers (Man of the Match): I got myself into a bit of a trouble there (with the catch of Murugan Ashwin). Im getting older, and like to keep myself on my toes all the time.

It wasnt that easy to get going. I think it went my way tonight.

We look at their batting lineup, its all class. They really kept us on our toes. We crossed the line, and we are really happy about that.

  • 23:54 (IST)

Kohli: That was closer than we thought it would be at one stage. But good to cross the line. I would like to win the toss next tiem

Specially with the kind of power that Perera has, we cannot relax at any stage. Instead of getting frustrated and annoyed, Watson came in and got the crucial breakthroughs, and Kane finished it off.

I wasn't too happy with myself, on how I played after 30-35 balls. AB kept me going, such a great partnership and world-class experience. We thought it was not that easy a wicket.

There's no doubt about the fact that AB is the best batsman of the generation. He's a much better human being than a batsman.

Sham (Shamsi), just came in and bowled really well!

  • 23:47 (IST)

Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bangalore have moved to the third spot with their latest win, while Rising Pune Supergiants have fallen to the seventh.

  • 23:44 (IST)

Dhoni: We lost three wickets early. We could have restricted (RCB) earlier. But Im quite happy with out batting. Disappointed with the loss, but there are a plenty of positives to look at.

Hopefully our bowling looks better in the coming games. If we can take catches, it could be a good blessing for us. In the batting, get those extra 10 runs. So every department needs to do more.

KP's injury could allow us to field Albie or Marsh.

  • 23:40 (IST)

    After 20 overs,Rising Pune Supergiants 172/8 ( Ankit Sharma 3 , Ishant Sharma 0)

Brilliant turnaround by Watson in the penultimate over, with four runs and two wickets coming off it! Perera is caught at cover by Mandeep off a miscue, before Ashwin is dismissed for a golden duck!

Richardson bowls the final over, with RPS needing 21 off the final over! Bhatia takes doubles off the first two balls, before getting caught by Watson at backward square-leg to depart for 21 off 11, with RPS' hopes virtually coming to an end! And he gets two in two, with Murugan Ashwin getting caught rather brilliantly by AB de Villiers near extra-cover! Turns around a couple of times in order to judge the catch, before finally trapping it between his palms. Hattrick ball for Richardson. Just a single off the last ball, with RCB pulling off a 13-run win. Meanwhile, RCB continue to be the only side in the tournament so far to successfully defend a total in the ninth edition of the tournament.

  • 23:33 (IST)

OUT! Ashwin follows suit as Watson gets his 2nd wicket of his over! Attempted slog towards midwicket with the intention of clearing the boundary rope, but does not get enough bat on it as the Patel in the deep holds on to the catch! What a dramatic turnaround! RCB 165/6 in 19 overs; Four runs and two wickets for Watson in the penultimate over!

  • 23:30 (IST)

OUT! Perera walks back to the pavilion! Full and outside off, and the Sri Lankan all-rounder miscues it towards Mandeep at cover! Departs for a superb 13-ball 34, but RCB are back in the game now! RPS 164/5 in 18.3 overs; need 22 to win from 9 balls.

  • 23:27 (IST)

    After 18 overs,Rising Pune Supergiants 161/4 ( Thisara Perera 34 , Rajat Bhatia 13)

OUT! Fuller delivery from Harshal outside off, and Dhoni hammers it down towards long-off. Unfortunately for him, AB de Villiers is stationed near that region, and he holds on to the catch as RPS lose their fourth wicket with 120 on board. Four and a big six conceded by Shane Watson in the 17th over, with 14 coming off it, as Perera and Bhatia are beginning to display intent of chasing the target down. And the 18th over goes for 25 runs, with two sixes and a hattrick of boundaries coming off it!

  • 23:18 (IST)

OUT! Now Dhoni walks back to the pavilion, and its a huge blow for Pune! Wide full-toss from Patel, and Dhoni hammers it down the ground. Unfortunately for him, AB de Villiers was positioned near long-off, and he held on to the catch comfortably for RPS to lose their fourth wicket with 120 on board! Dhoni walks back to the dugout for a well-made 41.

  • 23:12 (IST)

    After 15 overs,Rising Pune Supergiants 115/3 ( MS Dhoni (C) (W) 39 , Thisara Perera 6)

Watson is introduced into the attack after a round of spin from both ends. Meanwhile, with the required rate mounting alamingly, Dhoni and Rahane are attempting the big shots at the moment, but fail to connect properly. OUT! Rahane comes down the track, and misses the line of the delivery completely as wicketkeeper Rahul whips the bails off! End of the 91-run stand as Shamsi celebrates his first-ever IPL wicket in his final over of the innings.

  • 23:10 (IST)

OUT! Shamsi finally gets the big breakthrough! Rahane comes down the track to smash the length ball, but misses the line of the ball completely as Rahul whips the bails off in a flash. The opening batsman departs for 60 off 46 balls, as RPS lose their third wicket with 109 on board. End of the dangerous-looking 91-run stand.

  • 22:58 (IST)

    After 13 overs,Rising Pune Supergiants 94/2 ( Ajinkya Rahane 58 , MS Dhoni (C) (W) 27)

Dhoni and Rahane are beginning to look solid with each passing over now, and opposition skipper Kohli will be desperate for a breakthrough now. RCB have employed spinners at both ends for the time being, and the duo batting at the crease are able to get the pressure off their shoulders with some timely boundaries! Meanwhile, eight runs come off the 13th over, including a four off Rahane's bat off a full-toss along leg, as RPS reach 94/3 after 13 overs.

  • 22:42 (IST)

    After 10 overs,Rising Pune Supergiants 73/2 ( Ajinkya Rahane 43 , MS Dhoni (C) (W) 21)

The fifty comes up for RPS with a clever late cut by Rahane that sends the ball down towards third man for a four! RPS still trailing by a big margin though! Meanwhile, Dhoni and Rahane bring up the 50-partnership in the 10th over, and there is a plenty of responsibility on these two's shoulders as they need to start accelerating from this point onwards.

  • 22:23 (IST)

    After 6 overs,Rising Pune Supergiants 36/2 ( Ajinkya Rahane 20 , MS Dhoni (C) (W) 8)

FOUR! Elegant straight drive from Dhoni — something that one does not traditionally associate with the Indian limited-overs captain! Nine runs off the fifth over, with Watson coming in to bowl the final over of the powerplay. RPS reach 36/2 at the end of the powerplay — a very poor one given the target that they face as well as their present situation.

  • 22:09 (IST)

OUT! Harshal Patel appeals for an lbw off Smith, and the latter goes for a single as the umpire turns the appeal down. However, Kohli's runs in from point at lightning pace and disturbs the stumps at the striker's end with a direct hit! Smith is caught short of his crease after he turns around and looks to cover his ground. RCB 18/2, and skipper Dhoni is out to bat now!

  • 22:02 (IST)

OUCH Kevin Pietersen faces his first delivery, and is hobbling instantly after attempting to take a single. And he is forced to retire hurt after facing just one delivery, as RPS get off to a nightmarish start!

  • 22:01 (IST)

OUT! Faf looks to make room for himself, aiming to clear mid-off, but does not get enough power on the shot as Harshal Patel collects the catch at the said position, with RPS losing their first wicket with just 12 on board! Faf departs after scoring just two.

  • 21:37 (IST)

  • 21:34 (IST)

    After 20 overs,Bangalore 185/3 ( Shane Watson 1 , Sarfaraz Khan 2)

De Villiers and Kohli look set to guide RCB to a total in excess of 200, but their marathon second-wicket stand comes to an end in the second ball of the final over when he sends the ball straight to Rahane between midwicket and long-on to depart for 80, with the partnership coming to an end after getting to the 155-run mark. De Villiers departs off the very next ball, miscuing a slower one from Thisara Perera, as the latter does a Krunal Pandya to get rid of the deadly duo! In the end, the visitors finish on 185/3, 15 runs short of the 200-run mark.

  • 21:09 (IST)

    After 16 overs,Bangalore 137/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 51 , AB de Villiers 70)

Fifty for Kohli in 47 deliveries! Brings up the milestone for the fifth time in the last six matches! After a brief lapse in the previous game against Mumbai Indians, the dangerous duo are back in roaring form, and threaten to derail the game for RPS by themselves! Meanwhile, the 100-run stand is completed between Kohli and ABD in the 15th over! DROPPED! Virat Kohli has been dropped on 51 by Ankit Sharma at mid-off! That has to be one of the costliest drops ever!

  • 21:09 (IST)

    After 16 overs,Bangalore 137/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 51 , AB de Villiers 70)

  • 20:54 (IST)

  • 20:53 (IST)

    After 12 overs,Bangalore 106/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 43 , AB de Villiers 53)

Fifty run-stand between Kohli and ABd in the 10th over, and the two look set to get another massive score on the board for RCB. Meanwhile, ABD is batting ruthlessly at the moment, and hammers 12 runs off the 11th over. Fifty for ABD in just 25 balls as RCB bring up their 100 in the 12th over! Unless RPS stop these two, there could finally be a break in the chasing jinx in the ongoing tournament.

  • 20:39 (IST)

    After 9 overs,Bangalore 69/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 35 , AB de Villiers 24)

Kohli and ABD help breach the 50-run mark in the seventh over of the innings, and are starting to rebuild the innings after Rahul's dismissal. RPS will look for one of their bowlers to do a Krunal Pandya — get rid of both batsmen present at the crease before they cause any further damage. Meanwhile, Dhoni executes another 'goalkeeping' effort to save vital runs after Kohli looks to guide the ball down towards third man! First removing his gloves in the World T20 match against Bangladesh, and now this trick in the IPL. Can he get more innovative?

  • 20:28 (IST)

    After 6 overs,Bangalore 48/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 27 , AB de Villiers 12)

Kohli is served a free-hit off a front-foot no-ball by Ishant in the final over of the powerplay. That is probably the last thing that you want to do as a bowler. However, Ishant follows it up with an impressive yorker outside off, and Kohli fails to squeeze a boundary out of it towards backward point, getting only a single. Meanwhile, 11 runs are scored in the sixth over, as RCB reach 48/1 after sixth over.

  • 20:23 (IST)

    After 4 overs,Bangalore 29/1 ( Virat Kohli (C) 20 , AB de Villiers 1)

SIX! Kohli begins the third over with a flick over backward square-leg, before timing the full delivery perfectly towards midwicket to get a boundary off the very next ball! 11 runs come off the over, as RCB are off to a good start. Meanwhile, Pietersen drops a chance to dismiss KL Rahul while fielding at mid-on.

OUT! Rahul is dismissed as he is caught by Ishant at third man off the bowling of Perera, departing for 7 off 10 balls as RCB lose their first wicket with 27 on board.

  • 20:08 (IST)

    After 1 overs,Bangalore 9/0 ( Virat Kohli (C) 2 , Lokesh Rahul (W) 6)

Did Ashwin drop that? KL Rahul seems to have given a second life in the first over itself. He earlier punished Ishant Sharma for straying down leg, glanced him to the fine-leg boundary.

  • 19:48 (IST)

Hello and welcome to Firstpost's live coverage of the 16th match of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) between Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune on Friday.

The contest has boiled down to a clash between Dhoni and Kohli, the captains of Pune and Bangalore respectively. While one has already carved a niche for himself in the field, the other is shaping up as his successor.

PREVIEW: Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will aim to return to winning ways when they meet in an Indian Premier League (IPL) clash at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune on Friday.

Both teams started off in promising fashion by winning their respective opening matches, but lost their way thereafter with back to back defeats. A win on Friday will be crucial in getting their campaign back on track.

Both teams are on one point each after identical records of one win and two defeats. But Pune are at the fifth spot on the points table, a rung above Bangalore, due to a better run rate.

Pune are struggling to get going in both batting and bowling departments. They have star-studded batting line-up which includes the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Kevin Pietersen, Steven Smith and skipper MS Dhoni. But with the exception of Faf du Plesis, none of the big names have lived up to their reputation so far.

RCB also have an explosive batting line-up. They will miss star opener Chris Gayle, who has flown back home to Jamiaca following the birth of his first child. But the likes of captain Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Shane Watson have the ability to tear apart any bowling attack on their day. The young Sarfaraz Khan has also been promising.

The bowling however, is a cause for worry. Pacers Varun Aaron, Kane Richardson, Adam Milne and David Wiese have been far too expensive and have also struggled to get wickets. The spinners have fared no better with Yuzvendra Chahal, Parvez Rasool and Iqbal Abdullah struggling due their lack of experience.

Squads:

Rising Pune Supergiants: MS Dhoni (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Kevin Pietersen, Faf du Plessis, Steve Smith, Mitchell Marsh, Jaskaran Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ankit Sharma, Albie Morkel, Irfan Pathan, Ishant Sharma, Ishwar Pandey, Thisara Perera, Saurabh Tiwary, R.P. Singh, Rajat Bhatia, Ankush Bains, Baba Aparajith, Murugan Ashwin, Ashok Dinda, Deepak Chahar, Scott Boland, Peter Handscomb, Adam Zampa.
