IPL 2016, GL vs KXIP Live: Punjab end losing streak; beat Gujarat by 23 runs
  • 20:04 (IST)

  • 19:56 (IST)

Meanwhile, the points table remains unchanged.

  • 19:49 (IST)

    After 20 overs,Gujarat Lions 131/9 ( Dhawal Kulkarni 6 , Shivil Kaushik 0)

Sandeep to bowl the final over. Hit down the ground, but Faulkner refuses the single. OUT! Wicket off the second ball, and its the big one. Faulkner attempts the slog over long-on, but does not get enough power in th shot to get caught by Miller near the boundary rope. Departs for 32, and Gujarat's hopes end with his innings. In the end, the target was always too big for Gujarat, and in the end, it is Punjab who complete a 23-run win — their second in IPL 2016 so far — that too at the table-toppers' own backyard!

  • 19:39 (IST)

    After 19 overs,Gujarat Lions 125/8 ( James Faulkner 32 , )

12 runs are scored in the 18th over, giving Gujarat some hope, with the hard-hitting all-rounder Faulkner still present at the centre. The Australian all-rounder has finished many a game for various sides before, and will look to pull off a memorable win tonight! Mohit to bowl the penultimate over. Praveen gets a boundary off the third ball, and a couple off the following, before serving Cariappa a simple catch at short third man to depart for 15 off 13 balls. Gujarat need 30 off the last over.

  • 19:28 (IST)

    After 17 overs,Gujarat Lions 106/7 ( James Faulkner 26 , Praveen Kumar 3)

Kishan and Faulkner are looking increasingly settled at the crease when the former runs himself out thanks to some sharp fielding by Maxwell at cover. Gujarat lose their seventh wicket with 86 on board. Meanwhile, Mohit Sharma is back in the attack for the 16th over, and gets hammered for a four by Faulkner off the first ball straight down the ground, with the ball narrowly missing the umpire's head. The Australian all-rounder deals in singles with Praveen at the other end for the most part, until the last ball of the 17th over, in which he hammers Sandeep for a four towards extra-cover!

  • 19:14 (IST)

Ishan Kishan departs for 27 off 24 balls, this time underestimating the fielding skills of Maxwell. Pats one towards cover and attempts a quick single, but Maxwell is too quick for him as the ball reaches Stoinis' hands at the non-striker's end and kisses the stumps before Kishan can make it. GL 86/7 in 14.5 overs. Need 69 to win from 31 balls.

  • 19:06 (IST)

    After 14 overs,Gujarat Lions 82/6 ( Ishan Kishan 25 , James Faulkner 7)

Axar's hat-trick has pretty much knocked the stuffing out of table-toppers Gujarat by now, and a win is very difficult, if not impossible for Raina's side. Kishan and Faulkner are the last hope, and they face a mountain of a task before them. Kishan gets a much-needed boundary off Cariappa in the 13th over off a sweep, and he looks increasingly settled at the crease. Another boundary in the following over, this time Kishan going for the switch-hit towards deep third man to get his third boundary of the innings. And the KXIP all-rounder finishes with magical figures of 4 for 21 from four overs.

Gujarat need 73 off their last six overs, with four wicket in hand.

  • 18:49 (IST)

OUT! AND AXAR GETS HIS HATTRICK! Jadeja gets caught behind for a run-a-ball 11, and the all-rounder does not look happy with the umpire's decision — much like Maxwell earlier in the innings. However, the snicko shows a slight disturbance off Jaddu's bat. Anyway Gujarat lose their sixth wicket with 57 on board, and are virtually out of the game now, unless Faulkner and Kishan pull off something miraculous.

  • 18:41 (IST)

    After 9 overs,Gujarat Lions 49/5 ( Ravindra Jadeja 5 , Ishan Kishan 6)

It took a couple of overs for Gujarat to put the brakes on Punjab's march in their innings. And it has taken just one over for Punjab to get even with the home side, getting the crucial wickets of Smith, Karthik and Bravo — the last two off consecutive deliveries — for Gujarat to suddenly collapse to 39 for five after seven overs. And Jadeja and Ishan Kishan, the new batsmen at the crease, suddenly find themselves facing a rare uphill task, that of rescuing their side out of the mess. It is the bottom-ranked side of the tournament dominating the table-toppers — in David-Goliath style!

  • 18:36 (IST)

OUT! And that's three wickets in the over for Axar, who breaks into the 'Champion' dance after getting the wicket of Bravo! Similar delivery, and a similar dismissal, as Bravo gets an inside edge onto his leg-stump to depart for a first-ball duck. And table-toppers Gujarat have been reduced to 39 for five after seven overs! Three wickets by Axar in this over, and boy has he turned the game on its head!

  • 18:34 (IST)

OUT! Karthik hardly makes a difference, as he gets a thick inside edge off a flighted delivery from Axar that moves into the batsman! Departs for just two off four balls, as Gujarat Lions lose their fourth wicket with 39 on board!

  • 18:28 (IST)

OUT! And the third wicket falls for Gujarat, as Axar gets the big fish in Dwayne Smith! The dangerous opener from the Caribbean hammers the full delivery outside off down towards long-off, but doesn't get enough power on the shot as Gurkeerat holds on to the catch near the boundary! Smith departs for 15 off 18, as Gujarat lose their third with 38 on board!

  • 18:26 (IST)

    After 6 overs,Gujarat Lions 36/2 ( Dwayne Smith 15 , Dinesh Karthik (W) 1)

Raina comes down the track, and drives the full delivery from Axar outside off through extra-cover! Beautifully executed! Its no mystery that Raina is one of the best players of spin in the country. The skipper also gets his first six of the innings with a hook over long-leg, giving the shot ample time and handling the short ball — considered his nemesis — with finesse. OUT! Mohit gets his 2nd wicket, shatting Raina's stumps after the GL skipper attempted to clear midwicket with a wild swing. The home team are in a bit of a conundrum at the moment, having hobbled their way to 36/2 at the end of the powerplay.

  • 18:21 (IST)

BOWLED! Raina swings his bat in an attempt to clear midwicket. Misses the line of the straight, length ball from Mohit completely as his stumps get shattered, forcing him to depart for 18 off 15 balls. GL 34/2

  • 18:10 (IST)

    After 3 overs,Gujarat Lions 18/1 ( Dwayne Smith 11 , Suresh Raina (C) 5)

Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum walk out to bat for Gujarat Lions, and the duo have been in explosive form in recent times. Dr. Smith gets off to a flier with a four and a six in the first over off Sandeep Sharma, with 11 runs coming off it. However, another Sharma gets the early breakthrough for Punjab as McCullum is bowled off a short of length straight delivery from Mohit to depart for 1.

Three different bowlers in the first three overs, with opening batsman Stoinis bowling the third. Meanwhile, Raina walks out to bat after McCullum's dismissal. And the skipper gets his first boundary off Stoinis, guiding the ball towards the vacant midwicket region.

  • 18:03 (IST)

OUT! Short delivery from Mohit, and Baz is cramped for room while attempting to go for the cut! Gets his stumps shattered, as Lions are off to a shaky start with the departure of hard-hitting opener McCullum, who departs for just one off three balls! GL 13/1 in 1.4 overs!

  • 17:40 (IST)

    After 19.5 overs, Punjab 154 ( Sandeep Sharma 0)

Bravo gets his first scalp of the day after a slower entices Axar to smash over wide long-on. The all-rounder gets caught by Kishan near the boundary however, with Punjab losing their seventh with 145 on board. Full toss on leg stump in the next delivery, and Saha despatches the loose delivery towards fine-leg. BOWLED! Another slow ball from Bravo, and this time Saha misses the line while looking to clear midwicket, with his off-stump getting uprooted. KC Cariappa joins Mohit Sharma at the centre.

Final over to be bowled by Praveen, and he concedes just two singles off the first two balls, bowled along full length. BOWLED First wicket for Praveen in IPL 2016, and Mohit gets his leg-stump knocked over while coming down the track. Slower length ball from Praveen pitched outside leg, which moves into the stumps. BOWLED! Yorker this time, and Cariappa gets his off-stump uprooted while looking to hit towards the leg side. Punjab fail to bat out their quota of 20 overs after a superb start by Vijay and Stoinis, as they are bowled out for 154 with one ball left in their innings.

  • 17:34 (IST)

OUT! Second wicket of the over for Bravo, and this time he uproots Saha's off-stump with a slower one pitched along full length! Saha looks to clear midwicket with a slog, but misses the line. Departs for 33, as KXIP lose their eighth wicket with 151 on board in the 19th over.

  • 17:30 (IST)

OUT! Slower ball by Bravo, and Axar does not quite middle it while attempting to slog it over wide long-on! Kishan takes a well-calculated catch near the boundary rope, as Punjab lose their seventh with 145 on board!

  • 17:29 (IST)

    After 18 overs,Punjab 145/6 ( Wriddhiman Saha (W) 27 , Axar Patel 0)

FOUR! Flicked away towards deep square-leg by Miller off Faulkner in the second ball of the 16th over. Four more in fourth ball of that over, with Saha getting a thick outside edge. Meanwhile, Miller and Saha survive a couple of close decisions. Saha makes room for himself after shuffling to his left, and carves the short delivery over extra-cover off Bravo in the 17th over.

Miller departs in the following over, perishing after getting caught by Bravo at long-on while attempting to slog a full, wide delivery from Kulkarni, who gets his first wicket. Axar at the centre now, and he has the ability to pack a punch with the bat in the closing stages. Can he guide his side past 170 along with Saha?

  • 17:25 (IST)

OUT! Former skipper Miller's watch at the centre comes to an end. Pitched full and wide, the South African does not get the distance while coming down the track, and attempting to slog the delivery over long-on. Bravo perhaps has the safest pair of hands in the side, and does not let go of the opportunity. KXIP 139/6

  • 17:14 (IST)

    After 15 overs,Punjab 110/5 ( David Miller 19 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 4)

The 100 comes up for KXIP at the end of the 13th over, and there is still hope for the visitors with the pair of Vijay and Miller at the crease. Well, Vijay commits hara-kiri after getting caught by Bravo at deep square-leg while attempting a slog-sweep off Kaushik. Departs for 55, with KXIP losing their fifth wicket with 100 on board. Meanwhile, Kaushik finishes with figures of 3 for 20 from his four overs.

  • 17:02 (IST)

OUT! Probably the knock-out punch for KXIP, as skipper Vijay departs for 55 as he gets caught by Dwayne Bravo at deep square-leg while going for the slog sweep off a full delivery. Third wicket for Shivil Kaushik, and its turning out to be his day so far! Keeper Wriddhiman Saha walks out to bat now, with KXIP losing their fifth wicket with 100 on board.

  • 16:57 (IST)

    After 12 overs,Punjab 94/4 ( Murali Vijay (C) 51 , David Miller 11)

FOUR! Finally a welcome boundary for Punjab, with Miller guiding a full-toss outside leg down towards fine-leg. The visitors badly needed it to take some pressure off their shoulders, after the quick tumble of wickets. Vijay gets his fifty, on his first day as captain, in 36 deliveries with a boundary towards third man! Vijay has led from the front so far in the innings, and his side will need him to carry along all the way till the end. Meanwhile, the new skipper and the old skipper of KXIP need to forge a major partnership for their side now.

  • 16:44 (IST)

    After 9 overs,Punjab 74/4 ( Murali Vijay (C) 42 , David Miller 1)

Powerplay done, but Stoinis hardly gives a damn about the change of the field. Comes down the track, and hammers the first ball after powerplay down the ground! Jadeja manages to get back at Stoinis later in the over, with the Australian opener getting stumped for 27. Mystery chinaman Shivil Kaushik comes in to bowl the eighth over, with Shaun Marsh the new batsman at the crease. The next few deliveries turn out to be nightmarish for Punjab, as they lose three more wickets in a space of a few deliveries! From 65 for no loss, they suddenly find themselves reeling at 74/4 after 9 overs! Skipper Vijay, batting bravely on 42 at the moment, is watching his team fall apart haplessly from one end.

  • 16:42 (IST)

OUT! And its raining wickets at the SCA Stadium in Rajkot at the moment! Bad communication between Vijay and Gurkeerat, with the latter falling short of his crease by a big margin at the striker's end. From 65 for no loss, KXIP suddenly are reeling at 73/4! Gurkeerat run out for a three-ball duck.

  • 16:41 (IST)

OUT! And that's two-in-two for Kaushik, with three Australians departing within a space of a few deliveries! Maxwell looks to cut a length delivery outside off that  moves away from the batsman. Massive appeal from the keeper and the bowler, and the umpire raises his finger almost immediately, much to the disbelief of Maxwell. No sound heard in the replay, nor any disturbance in the snicko. This is absolutely terrible for Maxwell, as Punjab suddenly find themselves in a dangerous position.

  • 16:38 (IST)

OUT! Shivil Kaushik gets his maiden IPL wicket! Marsh attempts to guide the ball towards the leg side, and gets caught by opposition skipper Suresh Raina near short midwicket! The chinaman is ecstatic, as he finally gets his much-awaited first wicket, having missed out on it due to a no-ball in the previous game against Pune.

  • 16:30 (IST)

OUT! Soft dismissal for Punjab, with Stoinis missing the line of the Jadeja delivery completely while coming down the track and looking to clear the long-on boundary. Keeper Dinesh Karthik whips the bails off in a flash, as the Australian opener departs for 27 off 17, with KXIP losing their first wicket with 65 on board.

  • 16:27 (IST)

    After 6 overs,Punjab 59/0 ( Murali Vijay (C) 35 , Marcus Stoinis 22)

FOUR! Vijay strokes the third ball of the fourth over through extra-cover to get his fifth boundary of the innings. First six of the innings is hammered by Aussie opener Marcus Stoinis, who replaces Mitchell Johnson in the side. Comes down the pitch, and lofts Ravindra Jadeja over cow-corner. Meanwhile, its boiling at Rajkot today, with the heat in excess of 40 degrees. That does not stop the Rajkot locals from turning up in large numbers to support their side. Another big over for KXIP, with 17 coming off it, including a boundary through point off Stoinis' bat that also brings up the fifty opening stand. Stoinis continues his fierceness with the bat, coming down the track off a short ball, and pulling it towards midwicket. Meanwhile, Punjab are progressing at nearly ten per over, reaching 59 for no loss at the end of the powerplay.

  • 16:15 (IST)

    After 3 overs,Punjab 26/0 ( Murali Vijay (C) 24 , Marcus Stoinis 2)

Praveen Kumar bowls the first over, and Vijay gets off the mark with a couple of glorious cover drives, the first one of which goes for a four! Vijay has been the primary run-getter for Punjab so far in the IPL. Will he be able to continue making a difference with the bat now that he has been appointed captain of the struggling unit in place of David Miller. Nine runs scored off the first over of the day. Dhawal Kulkarni bowls the second over, and concedes four off it.

Vijay hammers his second boundary of the innings by coming down the track, and hammering Praveen straight down the ground. And he targets the same are again off the penultimate ball of the over, this time on the backfoot. Praveen gifts Punjab an expensive over by conceding a boundary off the last ball as well, with 13 coming off the third over.

  • 15:23 (IST)

Hello and welcome to Firstpost's live coverage of the 28th match of the ongoing IPL 2016 between Gujarat Lions and Kings XI Punjab. Will Gujarat continue to dominate at the top of the table, or will Punjab finally post a turnaround under new skipper Murali Vijay?

PREVIEW: Gujarat Lions (GL) will aim to continue their superb form in front of their home crowd when they take on Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) at Rajkot on Sunday.

The Lions have won six of the seven matches they have played so far and are at the top of the standings with 12 points. They will take further encouragement from the fact that they defeated Punjab by five wickets in their last match in Mohali.

Punjab on the other hand, are lying at the bottom of the table with only two points from six matches.

Gujarat have an explosive bating order spearheaded by openers Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith. McCullum has made 218 runs in seven matches while Smith, who replaced injured Australian Aaron Finch, has scored 148 runs in just three matches.

Gujarat captain Skipper Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthik are also in good form. The only point of concern is the lower-middle order with all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo struggling with the bat. Bravo has scored only 52 runs in seven matches while Jadeja has made 42 in six. However, Australian all-rounder James Faulkner can be relied upon to come up with the big hits lower down the order.

The Gujarat bowling has also been effective with pacers Praveen Kumar and Dhawal Kulkarni in good form along with Faulkner. Jadeja and Bravo have also done well.

Punjab on the other hand, have been a disjointed outfit so far. Despite having a bunch of big names like Murali Vijay, Shaun Marsh, David miller and Glenn Maxwell, they have only won one game so far.

Openers Vijay and Manan Vohra have done well, scoring 143 and 161 respectively in six matches. But the rest of the batting line-up has been a disappointment. Shaun Marsh is the only consistent performer in the middle-order with 158 runs in five games.

The visitors have a strong bowling attack on paper including the likes of Australian veteran Mitchell Johnson and South African star Kyle Abbott. But just like the batsmen, the bowlers are also yet to perform consistently.
