IPL 2016, KXIP vs RPS as it happened: Vohra-Vijay fifties, Maxwell cameo powers KXIP to first win

Apr, 17 2016 IST

  • 19:22 (IST)

It's all over, Maxwell imposed himself on RPS after Murugan Ashwin had turned it around for Dhoni. Maxwell's cameo left for late hand Kings XI Punjab a 6-wicket win, their first in the Vivo IPL 9. Dhoni's RPS have suffered their 2nd loss on the trot.

  • 19:18 (IST)

    After 18 overs,Punjab 144/4 ( Glenn Maxwell 24 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 3)

Time for the other Ashwin to cmoe up with his bag of tricks. But it's Maxwell who's got all the tricks here. He absolutely murders the elder Ashwin. He wants this to be done and dusted with. First a four, flciked off his pads, going down leg. Then a massive six! Fll, right in the sweet slot for Maxi and he whacks it to the moon over long-on. The game is all but over. Just 9 runs needed of 12 balls. KXIP are heading for their first IPL 9 win

  • 19:15 (IST)

    After 17 overs,Punjab 131/4 ( Glenn Maxwell 13 , Wriddhiman Saha (W) 1)

Ashwin gets the wicket but also goes for runs. Maxwell makes the most of it. Under pressure after a slowdown adn a slew of wickets, Maxwell picks up Murugan Ashwin and slog sweeps him for a maximum over at mid-wicket. He then goes inside-out for four in deep cover. The chase is now 22 off 18.

  • 19:12 (IST)

OUT!  KXIP captain David Miller departs on 7, Murugan Ashwin is turning into the hero Dhoni and RPS needed! Miller picks up a tossed up ball and lofts it to deep cover, wide on long-on. Kevin Pietersen takes an easy catch. Wriddhiman Saha comes in to bat.

  • 19:03 (IST)

    After 15 overs,Punjab 112/3 ( David Miller (C) 2 , )

SIX and OUT! Vijay is caught behind right after hitting a six to reach his half-century. Murugan Ashwin gets the wicket again, Dhoni must be pleased with him. Is he now the skipper's favourite Ashwin? Vijay goes for a cut, but edges it into the gloves of Dhoni. RPS right back into it.

Two new batsmen on the crease now, Miller and Maxwell. 41 more runs needed form 30 balls.

  • 19:00 (IST)

Fifty for Vijay! And he brings it up in style, with a massive six. 48 balls, 5 fours and 2 sixes.

  • 18:57 (IST)

KXIP skipper David Miller is out to bat.

  • 18:56 (IST)

OUT! Shaun Marsh is bowled! Murugan Ashwin does the trick for Dhoni and RPS. Marsh makes room and tries to cut a straighter one, misses, and the ball crashes onto his stumps. He goes on 4.

  • 18:52 (IST)

Ashwin comes in to bowl. RPS in hunt for another wicket and stall the KXIP chase.

  • 18:51 (IST)

    After 13 overs,Punjab 100/1 ( Murali Vijay 45 , Shaun Marsh 2)

OUT! Manan Vohra departs on 51! RPS finally get the breakthrough through Ankit Sharma, he traps the half-centurion leg-before as he tries to sweep. The Vohra-Vojay partnership was worth 97 runs, highest opening partnership in IPL 9. Shaun Marsh now comes in to bat.

  • 18:48 (IST)

Manan Vohra brings up his 50 from 31 balls. Seven fours in his innings

  • 18:44 (IST)

    After 11 overs,Punjab 86/0 ( Murali Vijay 41 , Manan Vohra 43)

Just the over KXIP needed! 3 fours off it, Manan Vohra finds the higher gear. Perera has gone for runs in the over, courtesy some wayward bowling. First ball up, Perera drifts down leg, Vohra lifts it off his pads, high above short FL, four. Next one a full delivery, driven with the full face of the bat through covers. Third ball, a complete shamble,  full toss so wide of the off-stump a car could get in, Vohra thanks Perera for the gift and in return sends the ball behind point for the third consecutive four of the over. 15 runs off it, Vohra moves to 43, Vijay-Vohra partnership now worth 86.

  • 18:38 (IST)

    After 10 overs,Punjab 71/0 ( Murali Vijay 40 , Manan Vohra 29)

Excellent from Vijay there, a classic Test shot. Slightly short from Pathan, bit wide as well, Vijay cuts it like butter, ball dissects gully and point, races to the fence. A much needed four as well, as Vohra-Vijat have been dealing in singles and doubles a while now. RR just a shade above 7. 71 from 10 overs, but the good news is, all wickets are intact. This might be a good time for Vijay and Vohra to kick a higher gear. They would not want the asking rate to bear down on all the good work done.

  • 18:32 (IST)

    After 8 overs,Punjab 58/0 ( Murali Vijay 33 , Manan Vohra 23)

Vijay and Vohra have provided KXIP just the right platform to go on and chase 153 down. Just eight runs off the last 2 overs, but the openers are going steadily. RRR is 7.7. KXIP would be wise to not let that climb, and keep the scoreboard ticking. A dearth of boundaries hurt RPS, KXIP must make sure it doesn't happen to them.

  • 18:22 (IST)

    After 6 overs,Punjab 50/0 ( Murali Vijay 29 , Manan Vohra 19)

Ashwin into the attack now. FOUR! Cut away by Vijay towards deep point! Vijay takes a single off the last ball of the over to bring up the 50 opening stand for KXIP! Superb batting by the duo so far.

  • 18:19 (IST)

FOUR! Vohra flexes his arms as well, smacks the half-volley from Ishant over mid-off! Moves to 10. Consecutive boundaries! Guides the ball down towards gully, where a misfield allows the ball to run away towards the boundary! And a third consecutive four! Ishant gets swatted towards deep point with a fine drive from Vohra! Eventful over for KXIP!

  • 18:16 (IST)

    Meanwhile, some stats for you.

The Australian captain accelerates  in the over and plays the aggressor, he smashes Abbott for a third four on a full toss, whipped to wide long on boundary.

Preview: Kings XI Punjab need to put up a strong show to bounce back from two successive defeats when they take on Rising Pune Supergiants in an Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket contest in Mohali on Sunday.

KXIP, who started their campaign at the Punjab Cricket Association's I.S. Bindra Stadium here against Gujarat Lions on Monday, crumbled to their second loss in as many games in an eight-wicket thrashing against Delhi Daredevils on Friday.

So far, they have failed to impress in every department. Against Delhi, they could only score 111 for nine, while in the match against Gujarat, they got off to a fine start thanks to Murali Vijay and Manan Vohra before the middle-order dropped its guard.

Murali Vijay scored a half-century against RPSG at Mohali. BCCI

Murali Vijay scored a half-century against RPSG at Mohali. BCCI

The main reason for their batting failure is due to the disappointing show from the mainstays -- David Miller and Glenn Maxwell. While South African Miller has scored 24 runs so far, Australian hard-hitter Maxwell has made two runs.

Their best batsman has been Vohra, who has 70 runs in two matches -- but the Punjabi right-hander doesn't have a game that can change the course of a match. His opening partner Vijay too hasn't shown the charisma. That's why it is important that both Miller and Maxwell fire.

"Out batting top-order needs to click to turn the things around in the coming matches. We have not been able to do that," Miller assessed after the match against Delhi.

Their bowling too, has been susceptible. Retired Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson is not the bowler he used to be, while young medium pacemen Mohit Sharma and Sandeep Sharma have been inconsistent.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel has been Punjab's best bowler but he hasn't go support from the other end to make any kind of impact.

In this case, Miller may drop Australian left-handed batsman Shaun Marsh and bring in all-rounder Marcus Stoinis, who played the game against Lions, scoring 33 runs and picking a wicket.

Punjab's opposition, Pune too has been coming off a seven-wicket loss to Gujarat. Mahendra Singh Dhoni-captained Pune was impressive in its opening match but showed a lot of chinks in its armour in the second.

Gujarat opening batsmen Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum tore apart Pune's bowling -- which should be a worry for Dhoni. Pacers R.P. Singh and Ishant Sharma have been inconsistent -- even though spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Murugan Ashwin have made amends for them. Gentle medium pacer Rajat Bhatia too has been impressive.

It will be interesting to see if Dhoni sticks with left-armer R.P. Madhya Pradesh seamer Ishwar Pandey and Irfan Pathan might get a look in, especially the Baroda left-armer as he also can contribute with the bat.

Otherwise, Pune's batting looks solid with the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Faf du Plessis, Kevin Pietersen and Steven Smith in their ranks. Dhoni is yet to decent chance to wield his bat, while Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh adds depth to the squad.
