Praveen Kumar is the Man of the Match for his breathtaking opening spell for the Gujarat Lions
Emphatic win for Gujarat. Kolkata untidy in the field today, but even in batting and bowling Raina & Co held the upper hand— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) May 8, 2016
Gujarat Lions win by 5 wickets
Jadeja finishes it with a six. Absolutely splendid run chase by the Gujarat Lions on a pitch that looked to have demons when Kolkata Knight riders played on it. The pitch became easier to bat on, but credit to the Gujarat Lions bowlers who rocked the Knight Riders early. The Lions go top of the IPL table as they end their three-game losing streak. They have hit the magical number of 14. The Lions should see it off to the play-offs from here. Knight Riders must regroup quickly
OUT! KD Karthik st †Uthappa b Hogg 51 (29b 8x4 1x6)
Karthik trying to finish off in style perishes. Still a great innings
FIFTY for Karthik! His 12th in the IPL. An innings from the top drawer, has Lions on the brink. Just need 4 runs from 22 deliveries
After 16 overs,Gujarat Lions 151/3 ( Dinesh Karthik (W) 47 , Aaron Finch 29)
Dinesh Karthik has been an absolute class. Has rarely took a risk, but has never let the required run rate go out of hand. Karthik's innings could very well be the difference between the two teams and it would fitting. Aaron Finch has come in and completely taken the game away from the home side. Lions need 8 runs to win from the last four overs
OUT! Raina goes! SK Raina c Hogg b Russell 14 (18b 1x4 0x6)
Suresh Raina top edges a short delivery which goes straight down the throat of Morne Morkel at fine leg. A way back for KKR?
HUNDRED up for the Gujarat Lions. The visitors have gone about the chase extremely well. Gujarat Lions need 59 runs from 50 balls
After 10 overs,Gujarat Lions 89/2 ( Suresh Raina (C) 9 , Dinesh Karthik (W) 19)
Gujarat Lions in the driver's seat after 10 overs. Kolkata Knight Riders are managing to slip in a few quiet overs, but its the wickets that they need badly.
Dinesh Karthik on fire! Three consecutive boundaries for the Gujarat Lions wicket-keeper batsman and the pressure is right back on the Kolkata Knight Riders. GL 81/2 after 9 overs
OUT! McCullum goes BB McCullum c Pandey b Chawla 29 (24b 3x4 2x6)
After 7 overs,Gujarat Lions 63/1 ( Brendon McCullum 27 , Suresh Raina (C) 4)
Gujarat Lions are in-charge of this game at the moment. Smith's aggressive approach didn't let the KKR bowlers settle into a rhythm and put them under pressure. Shakib got rid of Smith, but its McCullum who has put the foot on the accelerator. KKR badly in need of wickets
OUT! Shakib to the rescue again! DR Smith b Shakib Al Hasan 27 (18b 4x4 1x6)
One shot too many from Dwayne Smith against a wily Shakib Al Hassan as he is castled by Shakib. But Smith has given the Lions a good start
After 3 overs,Gujarat Lions 23/0 ( Dwayne Smith 15 , Brendon McCullum 8)
Good start from the Lions. Dwayne Smith is leading the charge for the visiting side. McCullum has been patchy and perhaps lucky to be still out there. Gambhir brought on Shakib Al Hassan in the powerplay when the pitch is having plenty of purchase for the fast bowlers.
LUCKY! McCullum looked to have under-edged a Andre Russel delivery to Robin Uthappa, but the umpire completely missed the nick. McCullum is a lucky man
Andre Russell the man in form opening the bowling for the Kolkata Knight Riders
Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith are coming out to open the innings for Gujarat Lions. The men from Rajkot need 159 runs from 20 overs to win this match and avoid a fourth straight loss
After 20 overs,Kolkata 158/4 ( Shakib Al Hasan 66 , Yusuf Pathan 63)
What a turnaround! Brilliant batting from Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hassan to get Kolkata Knight Riders to a respectable total of 158 that looked unlikely at a moment of time in the game. Gujarat Lions will need to battle the new ball and keep wickets in hand to chase what looks like a par score on this wicket
Shakib brings up his FIFTY! First half century for the Bangladesh all-rounder in the IPl and it couldn't have come at a better time for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Shakib along with Yusuf Pathan have transformed this game
After 17 overs,Kolkata 118/4 ( Shakib Al Hasan 33 , Yusuf Pathan 58)
Gujarat Lions have struggled to break this partnership and the stage is now set for these KKR big hitters to start the onslaught. From being 24/4, Knight Riders will be pretty happy to post a score for 150. Considering the juice it has on offer for the fast bowlers, the Lions won't find it easy to chase
Not just batting depth, but Kolkata also showing great fighting spirit— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) May 8, 2016
FIFTY! Brilliant half century from Yusuf Pathan. Came in at a difficult situation when KKR had lost four wickets in quick succession, but the way he has batted has completely turned the momentum in KKR's favour. How many more will Pathan get?
After 14 overs,Kolkata 88/4 ( Shakib Al Hasan 23 , Yusuf Pathan 40)
After consolidating, Pathan and Shakid al Hassan have changed gears. The KKR batsman have been given a helping hand by bringing on the spinners. Both Pathan and Shakib are top players of spin and perhaps Suresh Raina missed a trick by not continuing with his pace bowlers when the wicket was doing something for the quickies
If Kolkata muster 135-140, can still make a match of it. But it's a BIG if— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) May 8, 2016
After 10 overs,Kolkata 57/4 ( Shakib Al Hasan 13 , Yusuf Pathan 19)
Yusuf Pathan and Shakib al Hassan have steadied the Kolkata Knight Riders ship a bit. Pathan has looked good and the Knight Riders will be hoping he stays till the end here. If that happens, KKR is most likely to have reached a target they would like to defend after the disastrous start to their innings
After 7 overs,Kolkata 33/4 ( Shakib Al Hasan 4 , Yusuf Pathan 5)
The Gujarat Lions' bowlers just haven't allowed the Kolkata Knight Riders batsman to express themselves.KKR could have been five down had Pravin Tambe held on to the cat at third man. But otherwise the Gujarat Lions have backed the bowlers with some really good fielding. The Knight Riders will be taking heart by the fact that the pitch has plenty on offer for the bowlers and they may not need a score like 180 to remain competitive. A good partnership now can take them to a score which they can hope to defend
Looks like Kolkata have lost it in the powerplay itself. What a great catch Raina!— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) May 8, 2016
OUT! What a catch by Suresh Raina! SA Yadav c Raina b Smith 4
Bounce in Smith's delivery surprised Yadav who was was caught absolutely brilliantly at slip by Suresh Raina. This will be right up there with the among the best catches in the tournament
Kolkata look headed the Mumbai way today. Disastrous batting in powerplay. But Gujarat seamers splendid. BTW, very unusual Eden pitch!— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) May 8, 2016
OUT! Uthappa departs RV Uthappa c †Karthik b Kulkarni 14
The ball is moving and the Knight Riders batsman are struggling to deal with it. Dhaval Kulkarni joins in the party and removes the in-form Uthappa with a brilliant out-swinger which takes the outside edge
After 3 overs,Kolkata 17/2 ( Robin Uthappa (W) 10 , Suryakumar Yadav 2)
Praveen Kumar has rocked the Kolkata Knight Riders top order which is often known for laying down the foundations for the big hitters to explode. Kumar has got the bowl to move and the KKR batsman have struggled to live with it so far
Two wickets for Praveen Kumar! First Gambhir and then Pandey. Was probably lucky with Gambhir who played on to his stumps off his pads, but the second one was just pure class. An inch-perfect out-swinger that is impossible to play for a newcomer KKR 15/2
Praveen Kumar to bowl the first over for Gujarat Lions
Gautam Gambhir and Robin Uthappa are walking out to open the innings for Kolkata Knight Riders. The two openers have been in great form and gave the Knight Riders a great platform at the start of the innings against the Kings XI Punjab last time out. The fans at the Eden Gardens will be hoping for more of the same
Big match for Gujarat. Have to arrest slide. Tough match today. Kolkata have been on a roll lately, and playing at home too— Cricketwallah (@cricketwallah) May 8, 2016
GL XI: Smith, McCullum, Raina (c), Karthik, Finch, Bravo, Jadeja, Praveen, Tambe, Dhawal, Kaushik
KKR XI: Uthappa (wk), Gambhir (c), Pathan, Russell, Pandey, Suryakumar, Shakib, Hogg, Chawla, Morkel Umesh
Pravin Tambe comes comes in for Pradeep Sangwan for the Gujarat Lions while Kolkata Knight Riders name an unchaged side for the game at the Eden gardens today. Expect a cracking top of the table clash
Gujarat Lions have won the toss and Suresh Raina has invited the Kolkata Knight Riders to bat first. Suresh Raina feels it is better to chase at the Eden Gardens
Hello and welcome ot the live blog for Kolkata Knight Riders vs Gujarat Lions. Stung by three successive losses, IPL newcomers Gujarat Lions will aim to bounce back when they meet the in-form KKR at the Eden Gardens.
Kolkata: Stung by three successive losses, Indian Premier League (IPL) newcomers Gujarat Lions will aim to bounce back when they meet the in-form Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens here on Sunday.
Gujarat have been the team to watch out for from the beginning of the season. They kicked-off their campaign with a series of wins, but lately they have been struggling. On Friday night they suffered a five-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad and they will now have to deal with a very consistent KKR side.
The Knights have grabbed two back-to-back wins from their previous outings including a last over thriller against Kings XI Punjab on Wednesday. They have collected 12 points from eight games and Gautam Gambhir and his men are showing no signs of slowing down yet.
The captain has led from the front alongwith his opening partner Robin Uthappa. Both have scored plenty of runs, including a 101-run stand against Kings XI in the last game.
The duo have been well supported by the likes of Manish Pandey and Suryakumar Yadav. Yusuf Pathan and Andre Russell too have come up with crucial knocks in tricky situations.
Russell has also contributed with the ball. He has time and again bowled in difficult situations and delivered. The biggest example was his last over in the previous game where he gave away just four runs to gift his side a seven-run victory.
KKR's mystery spinner Sunil Narine, who is undergoing treatment for a bruised finger, is likely to make a comeback against Gujarat.
For the visitors, their top order trio of Brendon McCullum, Aaron Finch and Dwayne Smith had been terrific in the first few matches but of late they seemed to have lost a bit of colour. Even Raina is struggling with his form and has scored just one fifty in 10 games.
His half-ton, however came in a losing cause as Sunrisers easily overhauled the target with five wickets to spare in their last game.
If they are to dent KKR’s chances of winning the game, they will have to bat well in the slow and low Eden strip but with the armoury of slow bowlers that the hosts have it would not be easy.
Raina would want to pack his side with spinners on a track like this and therefore the 44-year-old Pravin Tambe might get a look in besides Chinaman tweaker Shivil Kaushik.
Kolkata Knight Riders: Gautam Gambhir (captain), Robin Uthappa, Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, Andre Russell, Suryakumar Yadav, Piyush Chawla, Brad Hogg, Shakib Al Hasan, Umesh Yadav, Morne Morkel, Sunil Narine, Chris Lynn, Jason Holder, Manan Sharma, Colin Munro, Kuldeep Yadav, Sheldon Jackson, Ankit Rajpoot, Jaydev Unadkat, Rajagopal Sathish,
Gujarat Lions: Suresh Raina (captain), Dwayne Smith, Brendon McCullum, Aaron Finch, Dinesh Karthik, Ravindra Jadeja, James Faulkner, Ishan Kishan, Praveen Kumar, Dhawal Kulkarni, Shivil Kaushik, Sarabjit Ladda, Amit Mishra, Akashdeep Nath, Dwayne Bravo, Paras Dogra, Eklavya Dwivedi, Shadab Jakati, Pradeep Sangwan, Jaydev Shah, Umang Sharma, Dale Steyn, Pravin Tambe, Andrew Tye.
