India vs New Zealand: Complete statistical review of India’s big win in 500th Test

Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s supreme all-round performances along with Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara’s crucial century partnerships in both innings, helped India mark their 500th Test match with a 197-run win over New Zealand in Kanpur. This was India’s third largest victory margin in-terms of runs against the Black Caps in Tests. New Zealand have played 10 series in India before this, and have not won a single one. With the loss in Kanpur, they have now lost the first match of a Test series in India for the sixth time. However, it should be noted that five of these matches ended in a draw. Here’s a look at the statistical highlights from the first Test match between India and New Zealand at Kanpur. # Ravindra Jadeja has taken 56 wickets in Asia from 10 matches at an average of 16.35, which is the best among all bowlers who have taken 50 or more Test wickets in Asia.

# In New Zealand’s first innings, six batsmen were out LBW, which is joint most by Indian bowlers in a Test innings. The other instance came against West Indies at Mohali in 1994/95. # In the Kanpur Test, there were a total of three century partnerships made by different pairs for the second wicket, only the the third such instance in Test cricket. The other two are  include a Test match between Australia and Pakistan in 1972-73 at Melbourne and an England-Australia Test at Lord’s in 1953.

Notes: - Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay’s pair became the second Indian pair to score two century partnerships in a Test match for the second wicket. The first was Rahul Dravid and Wasim Jaffer in 2006 at Nagpur. - Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara added 245 runs for the second wicket in this match, which is the second most by an Indian pair against New Zealand in a Test match, beating the record of 238 runs by Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid in 2010 at Ahmedabad. - Both Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara scored two fifty-plus scores in this Test. Vijay became the fourth Indian opener to score two fifties in a Test match against New Zealand. The other three are Ajay Jadeja, Aakash Chopra and Virender Sehwag. Pujara became the third Indian No 3 batsman to score two half centuries against New Zealand in a match. The other two are Ajit Wadekar and Rahul Dravid. - This was only the third instance when Indian No 2 and No 3 batsmen have scored two fifty plus scores in a Test match. The other two instances came in 1961 against England at Mumbai (BS) and in 1998 against Australia at Chennai. # Ravichandran Ashwin claimed his 200th Test wicket when he dismissed Kane Williamson in the second innings, becoming the fastest Indian and the second fastest overall to reach the milestone. The record is still held by Australia’s Clarrie Grimmett who completed his 200 Test wickets in 36 Test matches, back in 1936 against South Africa at Johannesburg. Notes: - Jadeja took a five-wicket haul in the first innings, becoming the fifth Indian left-arm spinner to take a five-wicket haul against New Zealand in a Test match. The other four are Bishen Bedi (four times), Bapu Nadkrani, Pragyan Ojha and Ravi Shastri. - Jadeja has taken five five-wicket haul in Tests which is the joint fifth-highest among Indian left-arm spinners. Bishen Bedi (14), Vinoo Mankand (8), Pragyan Ojha (7) and Dilip Doshi (6) are ahead of him in that list, while he is tied with Venkatapathy Raju. Ravichandran Ashwin now has five ten-wicket hauls in his career, which is the joint second most by an Indian bowler in Test cricket. Harbhajan Singh also has five while Anil Kumble is on top of that list with eight 1o-wicket hauls from 132 Tests. # The number of wickets taken by New Zealand spinners in the Kanpur Test is the third most by them against India in a Test match. Kiwi spinners had taken 19 wickets at Nagpur in 1969 and 12 wickets at Ahmedabad in 2010. At Kanpur, Mitchell Santner took five wickets while Ish Sodhi took three and Mark Craig took two wickets. # New Zealand spinner Mark Craig completed 50 wickets in this Test when he dismissed Indian captain Virat Kohli in India’s second innings, becoming the eighth New Zealand spinner to reach the milestone in Tests. He is also is the second fastest New Zealand spinner to take 50 Test wickets.

# Ravindra Jadeja picked up five-wickets in the first innings and scored a fifty in the second, becoming the second Indian player to achieve the double in the same Test against New Zealand. Javagal Srinath had done the same in Auckland in 1999. # Rohit Sharma completed his 1000 Test runs in his 19th Test match and therefore he became only the fourth Indian player after Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to score 1000+ runs in all formats of the game. # Indian bowlers have claimed ten LBW dismissals in this match, which is the most for them in a Test, beating the nine which came in against Australia in 2001 at Kolkata. # In the Kanpur Test, batmen scored 1160 runs, but no batsman successfully reached a three-figure mark, making it the fourth most runs in a Test match without a single century scored.

# India won this match by 197 runs which is their third largest victory in-terms of runs in a Test against New Zealand. India’s largest victory came against New Zealand (by runs) at Auckland in 1968.
