Ind vs Aus: Dhawan makes Australia look like Zimbabwe

1631 IST

Starc: Dhawan has batted fantasically well. He is a 180-odd at the end of the day and we will have to bowl pretty well tomorrow to get back into the game.

1630 IST
India 283-0 after 58 overs; Vijay 83, Dhawan 185

At close of play, India are comfortably in charge. In the last session: 29 overs, 127 runs in the session, no wickets. Dhawan played the Aussies like a champion. He even slowed down towards the end of the day to just remind them that the agony isn't over. Vijay played very well to make 83 and he was never in trouble either. Stunning batting by the Indian opening pair and this has to be the worst Australian bowling unit to come to India.

1606 IST
India 275-0 after 53 overs; Vijay 79, Dhawan 181

Runs and more runs. 20 minutes to go in this session of play and Australia just want to get it over with. So what homework will Arthur give the boys today?

1528 IST
India 257-0 after 51 overs; Vijay 71, Dhawan 173

Dhawan on target to get to 200 in two mind-boggling sessions. Who does this against Australia? No one. Which is why... we keep saying... this is not Australia.

1528 IST
India 229-0 after 45 overs; Vijay 66, Dhawan 150

150 for Dhawan off 131 balls, 29 fours, 1 six. What a stunning knock. There is nothing else to say really. This isn't Australia... it's Zimbabwe in disguise or some other club or school team.

1528 IST
India 211-0 after 39 overs; Vijay 62, Dhawan 136

Something for the Aussies to mull over, as the players take drinks.

1510 IST
India 191-0 after 39 overs; Vijay 57, Dhawan 121

In the afternoon session, Dhawan showed us that he can play all the shots. Now, he's showing us that he can use his head too. He is going completely mad here. This is good, intelligent cricket -- the way it should be. He is checking his shots when he has to.

1447 IST
India 170-0 after 34 overs; Vijay 51, Dhawan 111

Third Test fifty for Vijay. It has come off 103 balls with 5 fours and 2 sixes. But given the knock Dhawan has played at the other end, it has almost been forgotten.

1441 IST
India 163-0 after 32 overs; Vijay 44, Dhawan 111

And another four. Dhawan has started off a bit more circumspect but he is sure is timing the ball superbly. That is still there.

1435 IST
India 156-0 after 29 overs; Vijay 42, Dhawan 106

Players are back on after tea. Can Dhawan continue in the same vein?

1411 IST
India 156-0 after 29 overs; Vijay 42, Dhawan 106

And that's tea. What a session for India -- 28 overs, 153 runs, 0 wickets. What a session... what a knock. Dhawan... take a bow. Stunning... simply stunning. He virtually got the 100 in one session.

1356 IST
India 148-0 after 27 overs; Vijay 37, Dhawan 104

Dropped at gully! Dhawan gets a life on 94. Nothing going Australia's way.
Next ball, he is down the pitch again, gets a single.
And then a quick single gets his century -- it took just 85 balls and included 21 fours. What a knock! It's been a party. 84 runs in fours alone. It is the fastest ever Test century on debut.

1346 IST
India 134-0 after 24 overs; Vijay 36, Dhawan 91

Stunning knock by Dhawan. AFP

Stunning knock by Dhawan. AFP

What a knock. Dhawan's timing and placement have been absolutely superb. His driving on the up has been a revelation. Vijay just needs to watch from the other end. Australia have no answer to this.

1335 IST
India 123-0 after 23 overs; Vijay 35, Dhawan 87

18 runs from Doherty's last over -- 442044. Dhawan has moved on to 87 off 73 balls. And this man is making his debut!!! 44 dots, 9 singles, 1 two and 9 fours.

1318 IST
India 105-0 after 22 overs; Vijay 35, Dhawan 69

Dhawan has hit 15 boundaries in his knock. That's 60 runs in fours. This is stunning batting. And he isn't slogging. He is placing the ball amazingly well. Great batting.

1318 IST
India 83-0 after 18 overs; Vijay 29, Dhawan 54

Dhawan is making this look easy. How did Sehwag make it look so difficult... you have to wonder... the left-hander had 12 fours in his fifty which came off 50 balls. And then Vijay added to Lyon's hurt by slamming him for two sixes in the same over, which was hit for 17 runs. India are putting up an incredible batting display here.

1311 IST
India 57-0 after 15 overs; Vijay 17, Dhawan 40

Dhawan really has flayed the Aussie bowlers to all parts of the ground. After 9 overs, the spinners came on for the Aussies but that hasn't helped them either. Dhawan has 9 fours in his knock.

1246 IST
India 31-0 after 9 overs; Vijay 8, Dhawan 23

It's his first Test but no signs of nervousness from Dhawan. He has 23 off 24 balls and is playing shots as if he was born to play Test cricket.

1220 IST
India 12-0 after 4 overs; Vijay 3, Dhawan 9
India's openers are back on and Dhawan has hit a very picturesque drive through the off-side. It was perfect. Another boundary followed in the over.

1130 IST
India 3-0 after 1 over; Vijay 3, Dhawan 0

LUNCH. India negotiated the one over before lunch safely. No alarms there. But the post-lunch session will be big for both openers. The session saw 38.5 overs bowled, 138 runs scored and 3 wickets taken.

1116 IST
Australia 408 all out after 141.5 overs;
X Doherty lbw b Ashwin 5 (12b)

And that's it. Australia are bowled out for 408. Doherty the last man to fall but Starc (99) and Smith (92) did more than enough in the morning session. India will come out and bat for one over before lunch is called.

1101 IST
Australia 399-9 after 138 overs;
M Starc c Dhoni b Sharma 99 (144b, 14x4)

WICKET! That is heart-breaking for Starc -- he has become the 86th player to get out on 99. He looked nervous in the end.. Dhoni brought the field up and the singles dried up... but what a knock. He edged Ishant to Dhoni, who now has a hand in five dismissals in this innings. Great, great knock. Starc grins as he walks back... what a knock... it came out of the blue and India had no answer to him. Take a bow, Starc.

1046 IST
Australia 391-8 after 136 overs; Starc 92, Lyon 5

Australia are going to get to 400 it seems. Starc has been stunning -- his technique has been good, his shot selection has been even better.

1031 IST
Australia 372-8 after 130 overs; Starc 80, Lyon 0

26 overs, 100 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in this session already. Starc is hitting shots all over the park and India, right now, have no answer to him.

1008 IST
Australia 348-8 after 124.1 overs
S Smith st Dhoni b Ojha 92 (185b, 10x4, 1x6)

Great ball by Ojha. He drew him out and got it to turn, beat the bat and Dhoni completed a smart stumping. Smith played beautifully for his 92 and surely deserved a ton but he has made the game a lot more interesting than it was when he walked in. Great knock. And coming to Ojha, how could they keep him out of the team for Harbhajan?

0958 IST
Australia 340-7 after 122 overs; Smith 89, Starc 51
51 from just 86 balls for Starc and he has made it look easy. He has pulled Ishant off the front foot, hammered it over his head and played the spinners with a plan in mind. This is always Starc's longest innings in all first-class cricket.

0948 IST
Australia 325-7 after 117 overs; Smith 82, Starc 45

The Indians have looked rather flat all morning. The spinenrs have given Dhoni some control over the proceedings but Australia will be happy given how the day has begun for them. The 8th wicket stand has already put on 74 runs -- it is now the record 8th wicket stand at Mohali.

0934 IST
Australia 315-7 after 113 overs; Smith 79, Starc 40

The batsmen have treated Ishant and Buvneshwar with disdain. The new ball was taken after 108 overs -- Australia were 291-7. In 5 overs since then, the Aussies have hammered 24 runs and forced Dhoni to take the pacemen out of the attack.

0920 IST
Australia 301-7 after 110 overs; Smith 72, Starc 34

Australia have made a bright start to the day. Starc and Smith are looking to play their shots and that has immediately put India on the back foot. A couple for Smith brought up the 50-run partnership off just 69 balls.

0852 IST

Play should begin in a few minutes.

Day 3

Smith has shown great resolve and adventure to keep the Indian bowlers at bay. He has looked comfortable and in control. But can the other Australian batsmen stay with him? Starc can bat a bit but will that be enough on a good batting track?

Day 2

India fought their way back into the match after claiming four wickets in the final session to nullify Australia's 139-run opening stand, which had put the visitors in a strong position.

At stumps on the second day, Australia were 273 for seven with comeback man, Steven Smith and Mitchell Starc, batting on 58 and 20 respectively.

Day 1

Abandoned due to rain.
