Apr, 20 2017 IST

  • 00:16 (IST)

That's it from us at Firstpost Sports, in our coverage of Match 21 of IPL 2017 between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Daredevils at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday. Do tune in tomorrow for the face-off between Kings XI Punjab and Mumbai Indians at the former's adopted home venue of the Holkar Stadium in Indore.

    Till then, goodnight.

  • This is the second time SRH have won an IPL match when David Warner scored less than 10 runs

  • 23:50 (IST)

Kane Williamson is the 'Man of the Match' for his effort of 89 off 51 balls in his first game of the tournament!

  • Angelo Mathews today:

    Batting: Runs - 31, Balls - 23, 4s - 2, 6s -1
    Bowling: Runs - 41, Balls - 18, 4s -2, 6s - 3

  • Poor all round execution from DD all round. Bowling looked ineffective without Shahbaz Nadeem. But how did they ever imagine chasing down 191 with Chris Morris not facing a single ball? Ridiculous strategy.

  • 23:37 (IST)

    After 20 overs,Delhi Daredevils 176/5 ( Shreyas Iyer 50 , Chris Morris 0)

Kaul to bowl the final over. Just two off the first ball of the over, with Mathews not quite connecting in his attempted slog towards the leg side. SIX! The Sri Lankan connects perfectly this time, with Kaul failing to get the yorker right. Kaul makes up for it in the third ball, getting his yorker right this time. Gets the ball to angle into the batsman. Dot in the fourth ball, with the 26-year-old beating Mathews' defence with an inswinger. It should be SRH's win now, unless he bowls a no-ball. Mathews is dismissed in the fifth ball, top-edging a slow short ball to long-on. Iyer collects a single off the last ball to get to his half-century, though he hardly celebrates as his side end up on the losing side.

Sunrisers Hyderabad win by 15 runs!

  • Bhuvneshwar Kumar has taken atleast two wickets in every match before today in this IPL.

  • 23:36 (IST)

OUT! Mathews looks to slog the slow short ball down the ground, but ends up top-edging it to Jordan stationed at wide long-on! DD 175/5, needing an impossible 17 off the last ball.

Angelo Mathews c Jordan (sub) b Kaul

  • Ridiculous strategy from DD that Chris Morris is still sitting in the dugout while they need 4 runs per ball. If Pant got out for a duck, Morris needed to come out soon. Didn't happen and adds to DD's woes here.

  • 23:31 (IST)

    After 19 overs,Delhi Daredevils 168/4 ( Shreyas Iyer 48 , Angelo Mathews 25)

Bhuvi to bowl the crucial penultimate over. Couple of runs to start the over off, with Mathews hitting it towards the midwicket region. FOUR! Iyer steers a yorker towards the third man boundary, with the fielder stationed inside the circle failing to stop it. Single off the last ball, with 10 coming off the over. Delhi still have a chance in the last over, with these two still around.

Delhi Daredevils need 24 to win from 6 balls.

  • 23:26 (IST)

    After 18 overs,Delhi Daredevils 158/4 ( Shreyas Iyer 43 , Angelo Mathews 21)

Kaul to bowl the 18th over. FOUR! Mathews swings his bat towards the leg side, and gets his second boundary of the innings. Takes a single off the next ball to bring up the 150 for the Daredevils. Mathews and Iyer exchange the strike between themselves over the next few deliveries, with the latter dispatching the last ball towards the square-leg boundary to get 13 off the over, with the boundary also bringing up the 50-partnership!

Delhi Daredevils need 34 to win from 12 balls.

  • No option but to go for the jugular for DD. Even so target looks a bit out of reach. Needed someone to hit out in the middle overs. Pant's dismissal didn't help. Too much to do now.

  • 23:21 (IST)

    After 17 overs,Delhi Daredevils 145/4 ( Shreyas Iyer 38 , Angelo Mathews 13)

Bhuvneshwar into the attack with four overs left in the innings. Three singles off the first three balls, with the last one being a perfect yorker. Iyer miscues the fourth ball down the ground, failing to pick the slower one, though it falls well short of Jordan. Wide called in the fifth delivery. FOUR! To end the over, with Iyer guiding it past short third man! 10 off the over.

Delhi Daredevils need 47 to win from 18 balls.

  • 23:17 (IST)

    After 16 overs,Delhi Daredevils 135/4 ( Shreyas Iyer 32 , Angelo Mathews 10)

Henriques to bowl the 16th over. Mathews scoops the third ball towards long-leg, getting his first boundary in the process. Two singles and a double in the remainder of the over, with coming off it.

Delhi Daredevils need 57 to win from 24 balls.

  • This is the first time Rashid Khan has not taken a wicket in an IPL match. He played five matches before this and took atleast a wicket in each of them.

  • 23:11 (IST)

    After 15 overs,Delhi Daredevils 127/4 ( Shreyas Iyer 31 , Angelo Mathews 3)

Rashid into his final over. Iyer hammers the second ball of the 15th over down the ground for his first six, helping himself into another three balls later, this time hammering it towards the leg side! Turns out to be a forgettable day for Rashid, who concedes 33 without getting a single wicket.

Delhi Daredevils need 65 to win from 30 balls.

  • 23:09 (IST)

    After 14 overs,Delhi Daredevils 111/4 ( Shreyas Iyer 18 , Angelo Mathews 1)

Mohammed Siraj into his final over, and he starts off with a wicket, with Samson falling short of his half-century by eight runs after slicing the slower ball towards extra-cover. Sri Lankan all-rounder Mathews walks out to bat, and gets off the mark in his third delivery. Iyer ends the over with a cut towards the point boundary.

Delhi Daredevils need 81 to win from 36 balls.

  • 23:03 (IST)

OUT! Siraj inflicts another blow on the Daredevils! Samson looks to go for the lofted drive, but ends up slicing the slower ball to Henriques near extra cover. DD 105/4

    Sanju Samson c Henriques b Siraj 42(33)

  • 23:00 (IST)

    After 13 overs,Delhi Daredevils 105/3 ( Sanju Samson 42 , Shreyas Iyer 13)

Henriques back into the attack, bowling his second over. Iyer gets his first boundary at the start of the over, ramping the back of length along the off-stump towards the third-man boundary! 10 off the over, with the batting side now calling out for the timeout.

Delhi Daredevils need 87 to win from 42 balls.

  • 22:59 (IST)

    After 12 overs,Delhi Daredevils 95/3 ( Sanju Samson 40 , Shreyas Iyer 5)

Rashid into his third over. He has had an average, wicketless run in the match so far. Iyer tries to slog the third ball of the over down the ground, but gets only a single. Five singles off the over, with Samson entering the 40s.

Delhi Daredevils need 97 to win from 48 balls.

  • 22:53 (IST)

    After 11 overs,Delhi Daredevils 90/3 ( Sanju Samson 38 , Shreyas Iyer 2)

Kaul back into the attack, and keeps the pressure up on Delhi with a tight over, conceding just three singles off it. Hyderabad now have a golden opportunity to make the most of the breakthroughs, and tighten the screws on Delhi's scoring rate.

Delhi Daredevils need 102 to win from 54 balls.

  • 22:50 (IST)

    After 10 overs,Delhi Daredevils 87/3 ( Sanju Samson 37 , Shreyas Iyer 0)

Yuvraj introduced into the attack, and he bowls what could turn out to be the gamechanging over! Samson starts off with a boundary towards the off side first ball, before coming back for a risky second in the second ball with Nair falling short of his crease at the non-striker's end. Pant, who has been one of Delhi's hardest-hitting batsmen, is dismissed for a golden duck after holing out to Warner at long-on! Seven runs and a wicket off the over.

Delhi Daredevils need 105 to win from 60 balls.

  • The one time DD move Rishabh Pant up from no.5, and he gets out for a first-ball duck. Huge body blow for the visitors here. Sanju Samson has to carry on to build any hope of chasing this down.

  • Karun Nair since his triple century v England across formats:

    14, 12, 28, 7, 14, 12, 4, 26, 0, 23, 5, 4, 0, 21, 33 (Today)

  • This has been another brilliant powerplay for DD. Sanju Samson as opener, since his century in Pune, is really working well for them. Karun Nair isn't looking too short of confidence in his shots, never mind his poor run off late. They have put together a very useful partnership here, a possible base for an attack at this target later on.

  • 22:47 (IST)

OUT! Rishabh Pant looks to start off his usual way, with a slog, but ends up getting caught by Warner at long-on first ball! DD 86/3

    Rishabh Pant c Warner b Yuvraj 0(1)

  • This is Karun Nair's first 30-plus score across formats since his triple century against England in Tests. He played 14 innings across formats in between.

  • 22:44 (IST)

OUT! The partnership finally comes to an end after Nair is run-out, thanks to the combined work of Vijay Shankar and Yuvraj Singh! DD 85/2

    Karun Nair run out 33(23)

  • 22:40 (IST)

    After 9 overs,Delhi Daredevils 80/1 ( Sanju Samson 31 , Karun Nair 33)

Rashid back into the attack for his second over. Mix-up between the two batsmen in the first ball, though Samson eventually makes it home thanks to a late throw from the off side. The two batsmen deal in singles in this over, with 5 coming off it. The umpire signals for the first timeout of this innings.

Delhi Daredevils need 112 to win from 66 balls.

  • 22:37 (IST)

    After 8 overs,Delhi Daredevils 75/1 ( Sanju Samson 28 , Karun Nair 31)

Henriques into the attack. FOUR! Samson guides the third ball of the over down the ground to bring up the 50-stand for the second wicket! The two have gone about business with a sense of responsiblity, occasionally mixing caution with aggression. Karun looks to pull a slower ball towards fine-leg, but misses the delivery completely. Wide off the last ball. SIX! Nair ends the over with a clean hit towards the wide long-off boundary!

Delhi Daredevils need 117 to win from 72 balls.

  • 22:33 (IST)

    After 7 overs,Delhi Daredevils 61/1 ( Sanju Samson 22 , Karun Nair 24)

Siraj continues fter the powerplay, and he bowls a much better over this time, with five coming off it. Samson hits the first ball just wide of mid-off, and Warner gets a bit of hand to it to guide it towards long-on.

Delhi Daredevils need 131 to win from 78 balls.

    After 7 overs,Delhi Daredevils 61/1 ( Sanju Samson 22 , Karun Nair 24)

  • 22:29 (IST)

    After 6 overs,Delhi Daredevils 56/1 ( Sanju Samson 18 , Karun Nair 23)

FOUR! Rashid is introduced into the attack in the final over of powerplay, and Samson starts off by glancing the first ball towards fine-leg to bring up the team 50. Nair ends the over with a sweep towards the square-leg boundary after reaching out for the shot. Poor start for Rashid, with nine coming off the over.

  • 22:25 (IST)

    After 5 overs,Delhi Daredevils 47/1 ( Sanju Samson 14 , Karun Nair 19)

SIX! Effortlessly hit over the wide long-on boundary by Samson in the first ball of Siraj's second over. FOUR! Nair drives the third ball towards the cover boundary, with the ball beating SRH skipper Warner to the padded cushion. The Karnataka batsman then ends the over with a top-edge towards the backward square-leg boundary, with the mishit falling wide of the short fine-leg fielder and running away for a four. 15 off the over!

  • 22:21 (IST)

    After 4 overs,Delhi Daredevils 32/1 ( Sanju Samson 7 , Karun Nair 11)

Siddharth Kaul to bowl the fourth over. SIX! Samson finally gets off the mark, and in some style! Kaul bowls this one into his slot, and he obliges with a slog down the ground! Two singles in the over apart from that hit.

  • There were calls for Karun Nair to be demoted in earlier matches. Not today, for DD need someone to bat time at one end. Great opportunity for out of form Nair to do so.

  • 22:17 (IST)

    After 3 overs,Delhi Daredevils 24/1 ( Sanju Samson 0 , Karun Nair 10)

Bhuvneshwar into his second over, and he gets hammered for back-to-back boundaries towards the offside off Nair's bat. Just one more single scored in the over, with nine coming off it. Nair appears to have settled at the crease faster than opener Samson, who is yet to get off the mark after facing four deliveries.

  • 22:13 (IST)

    After 2 overs,Delhi Daredevils 15/1 ( Sanju Samson 0 , Karun Nair 1)

Siraj into the attack on IPL debut. Nearly gets a wicket first ball after a top-edge off Billings' bat carries just wide of Yuvraj at backward point, before running away to the boundary. Billings hammers two more boundaries in the over, albeit more confidently, before flicking the penultimate ball straight to Hooda at midwicket! 13 runs and a wicket from the over.

  • 22:10 (IST)

OUT! After a close chance in the first ball, and three boundaries, Siraj finally gets a wicket! Dismisses Billings, who flicks straight to midwicket! DD 14/1

  • Sanju Samson in IPL-10 before today:

    v Pace: Runs - 125, Balls - 71, SR - 176.06
    v Spin: Runs - 48, Balls - 47, SR - 102.13

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad have only won one match when David Warner has scored runs in single digit. They won a match in 2016 against RR at Ahmedabad when David Warner scored only six runs in that match.

  • 22:03 (IST)

Right! Billings and Samson are the openers. Bhuvneshwar will start off.

  • 191 - Too tall an ask for DD this. They have scored 200-plus in this IPL before but that came on the back of a brilliant Sanju Samson hundred. Never say never in T20 cricket, but DD will need another similar innings to chase this down. But what about their bowling performance? Leaving out Shahbaz Nadeem (economy 4.9 remember!) is looking a glaring error once again. Amit Mishra completely taken apart. Jayant Yadav only used for two overs. Poor strategizing from DD management.

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad  today:

    1-6 overs: 39-1 (RR-6.50)
    7-15 overs: 96-0 (RR-10.67)
    16-20 overs: 56-3 (RR-11.20)

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad have won seven out of eight matches while scoring 180-plus runs batting first in IPL.

  • 21:48 (IST)

    After 20 overs,Sunrisers Hyderabad 191/4 ( Moises Henriques 12 , Deepak Hooda 9)

Zaheer bowls the final over. SIX! Birthday boy Hooda gets quite the present in the form of a juicy full-toss that he has no problem in smashing over the square-leg boundary. Goes for another slog next ball, though he gets only a single this time after hitting it towards a fielder at cow-corner. FOUR! Now Henriques comes down the track, and pulls this one towards the gap between the square-leg and midwicket fielders, before slogging the next ball down the vacant long-off region. Single off the last ball, with 17 coming off it, as SRH set a stiff 192-run target.

  • 70 is Shikhar Dhawan's highest score in IPL in last 58 IPL innings including today. He scored 73* runs v MI at Hyderabad (RG) in 2013.

Preview: Sunrisers Hyderabad will look to continue their three-match winning run at home when they face a spirited Delhi Daredevils in an Indian Premier League (IPL) contest at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

All of Hyderabad's three wins have come here and they won their last match on Tuesday, defeating Kings XI Punjab by five runs. They have lost both their away matches played so far, which suggests that they really thrive at home.

However, their might will come under serious challenge against Delhi, who defeated Punjab by more than 50 runs before losing to Kolkata Knight Riders by four wickets in a match decided in the last over.

Packed with young batsmen like Sam Billings, Sanju Samson, Karun Nair and Shreyas Iyer, the Zaheer Khan-led Delhi's strength lies in their array of talented seam-bowling all-rounders. The likes of Chris Morris, Corey Anderson, Angelo Mathews and Pat Cummins provide the depth and balance to the side. But the exciting team sometimes faces an absence of a pivot around which the team will bat around.

Captain Zaheer Khan has shown that despite his international retirement, he remains one of the best exponents of seam bowling. Supporting him in the bowling attack will be Mohammed Shami and veteran leg-spinner Amit Mishra.

Not only Delhi's bowling but also their batting faces tough challenges against defending champions Hyderabad, who boast one of the most balanced teams in the tournament.

In Ashish Nehra and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hyderabad have two of India's best shortest format medium pacers. Bhuvneshwar's ability to mix seam with yorkers and blockholes at both the start and at the death overs has been high quality stuffs in T20 cricket. He is currently the highest wicket-taker with 15 scalps. Meanwhile, Hyderabad's newly acquired Afghan spin pair of Rashid Khan and Mohammed Nabi has been impressive.

"Sunrisers are known for their bowling strength and defending low totals," Bhuvneshwar said after his team defended a total of 159/6 against Punjab.

In batting, though they have strong batting line-up, they have been so far reliant on captain David Warner to show them the way. The Australian left-handed opener is currently leading batting charts in the tournament so far with 235 runs. His opening partner Shikhar Dhawan too is in decent form, scoring 135 runs.

However, Yuvraj Singh (93 runs), Deepak Hooda (50) need to step up, while Australian Moises Henriques will be asked to deliver both with the ball and the bat.
