Bombayla Devi's Olympic journey comes to an end

Indian archer Laishram Bombayala Devi lost her round-of-32 match against Mexico’s Aida Roman 2-6 to bow out of the London Olympics here Monday. Though Bombayala edged out Aida in the second set (25-24) to level the tie, erratic shooting cost her the match. The World No. 48 lost the third set 24-26 to trail 1-2 in the knock-out match and a bizarre show in the fourth sealed her fate. Thirteenth-ranked Aida collected 27 points to proceed in the competition. Earlier in the day, Bombayala scraped past Evangelia Psarra of Greece 6-4 in her opening match of the women’s individual event held at Lord’s. The Indian raised her level of shooting after losing the first set 25-27. She scored three tens in the second and third to win it 28-24 and 28-26. Bombayala’s erratic form came to the fore when she shot a fourth in the penultimate set which ended at 25-25, ensuring a point each for both the opponents. Chekrowolu Swuro plays her first match Tuesday while World No. 1 Deepika Kumari Wednesday. The trio of Deepika, Swuro and Bombayala lost to Denmark in their opening elimination round Sunday. IANS
