Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi today said the UPA 2 faced storm within and outside Parliament in its three years of existence.
Attacking the opposition as “aggressive and irresponsible” at the third anniversary of UPA 2 in New Delhi, Gandhi said, “We are focussed on progressive politics. We have always maintained etiquette and we know that we have a mandate to fulfill and we will do that.”
Accepting that the things for UPA 2 have not been easier, she said, “Todays times are difficult but this is no reason to feel depressed.”
The Congress president said that her party was aware that the general elections are not far away and it is high time to get ready to fight the polls.
“We know that only two years are left for the polls. We know that our future depends on our performance. We have to renew our determination our strive to serve the people. Today is the time we recall the fundamentals on which UPA was formed,” Gandhi said.
In her speech, the UPA chairperson sought to pinpoint some of the specific achievements of UPA 2.
“The achievement of UPA 2 is unique. MNREGA became more effective in UPA 2 while there was expansion of health insurance. The farming sector also became much more organised,” she said.
“Loans to farmers have been increased,” the UPA boss said.
“We are determined to remove the difficulties of women and the economically weaker section. We are united to progress economically,” Gandhi said.
She said the Centre is funding the states much more than ever before.
“The Centre is financing the states in a record manner so that bigger goals can be achieved,” Gandhi said.
