The following are the property details of ex-Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan’s family members. Most of these were acquired during the period Balakrishnan was CJI. Most of these properties were also bought at seemingly undervalued rates when they were purchased in 2007 and, later in 2008-09. While two of the properties were bought at one-sixth the price, the ex-CJI’s son-in-law purchased properties for a fraction of the valuation of the time.

1. Flat No 34/2557 purchased for Rs 6 lakh on 12 February 2007 from Martin Jose at ‘Travancore Residency Towers’, Edapally North, Ernakulam, by Balakrishnan’s daughter KB Soni
Actual Price Valuation in 2007: Approximately Rs 35 lakh
Current Price: Approximately Rs 60 lakh.
2. Flat purchased for Rs 6.6 lakh with 1,336 square feet area in ‘Mather Square’ at Ernakulam’s Old Railway Station Road. This fifth floor flat was purchased by KB Soni on 13 March 2007.
Actual Price Valuation in 2007: Approximately Rs 35 lakh
Current Price: Approximately Rs 70 lakh.
3. The first property in son-in-law PV Sreenijan’s name (Soni’s husband) was acquired in 2008. Land was purchased from Mohammed Idbal Mather with title deed No 4679/2008 on 13 November 2008 for Rs 14 lakh in Kadukutti village in Thrissur district. He is constructing a resort on the land which is on the riverside. Five separate land deeds were registered to acquire the following plot sizes: 58 cents, 35 cents, 52 cents, 73.14 cents, 59.38 cents. Total land 277.52 cents.
Actual Price Valuation in 2008: Rs 2.77 crore (at Rs 1 lakh per cent)
Present Market Price: Approximately Rs 10 crore
4. Sreenijan purchased another property on 5 June 2009 for Rs 30 lakh in Deshabhimani Road, Kaloor, in Ernakulam town.
Actual Price Valuation in 2009: Approximately Rs 1.5 crore
Present Market Value: Approximately Rs 2 crore
5. Sreenijan purchased 3.5 cents of land for Rs 15 lakh on 6 October 2010 (Deed No 12883/2010) in his mother’s name, Sreemathy Vasu, at Deshabhimani Road, Kaloor, in Ernakulam Town. This property adjoins his other plot.
Actual Price Valuation in 2010: Approximately Rs 70 lakh.
6. Advocate MJ Benny (Balakrishnan’s second son-in-law) purchased 96.5 cents land on the side of the National Highway in Marad between 19 March 2008 and 26 March 2010 for Rs 81.5 lakh.
Actual Price Valuation between 2008-10: Approximately Rs 4 crore
Current Valuation: Rs 10 crore
7. KB Rani (Balakrishnan’s younger daughter), a practicing lawyer in the Kerala High Court, purchased 10.5 acres of land along with Lakshmi M Subramanyam and Abhilash T Chandran in Athirambuzha village in Kottayam district in 2007. The purchase was made for Rs 10.5 lakh (Rs 1 lakh per acre).
Actual Price Valuation in 2007: Approximately Rs 10.5 crore
Current Valuation: Approximately Rs 15 crore
