‘Prior commitments reason for Mamata not attending UPA meet’

Aug 8, 2012

Kolkata: Dismissing reports that it boycotted the first UPA coordination committee meeting headed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi held at New Delhi today, the Trinamool Congress said that party chairperson Mamata could not attend because of a pre-scheduled meeting in Junglemahal.

“The UPA leadership invited Mamata Banerjee to attend the first meeting of the UPA coordination committee, but she could not make it since she was in junglemahal where she had a pre-scheduled important programme,” party Rajya Sabha member Kunal Ghosh, a close aide of Banerjee, said.

“The UPA leadership has been communicated by the TMC leadership. There is no question of boycott of the meeting by TMC or any differences with the UPA over it or any communication gap,” he said.

Ghosh said that railway minister Mukul Roy accompanied the Trinamool supremo.

He said that Banerjee would try to attend the next meeting of UPA coordination committee if invited or any other representative from the party.

The constitution of the coordination committee was announced on Tuesday to ensure cohesive functioning of the alliance, a demand that was placed by ally NCP during its recent stand-off with Congress a fortnight ago.
