Police disperse crowds at Gujarat govt’s cheap housing scheme

by Aug 27, 2012

Ahmedabad: The police had to resort to a lathi-charge outside the Gujarat Housing Board office in Ahmedabad on Monday after crowds swelled to collect forms for the state government’s affordable housing scheme.

Interestingly, the government’s announcement comes in retaliation to the Congress’ scheme, which said it would provide affordable housing to the poor people for just Rs 70,000 a house if voted to power. There was huge response, especially among women, to the announcement.

Chaos broke out when it emerged that despite announcements for form disbursement starting on Monday, the forms had still not been printed. The police had to use force to bring the situation under control.

Gujarat Congress has named their scheme as Ghar nu Ghar, while in response the Narendra Modi-led BJP government has revitalised Gujarat Housing Board (GHB) – the body in charge of such allotments.

Gujarat is set for assembly elections in December this year.
