In a setback to DMK MP Kanimozhi, the Delhi High Court has adjourned her bail plea till 1 December, and has issued a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seeking its opinion on the plea by the end of the month. Kanimozhi, an accused in the 2G spectrum case, and four others accused in the case had submitted bail pleas in the Delhi High Court after the CBI trial court rejected their bail plea. Kanimozhi had sought bail on the grounds of being a woman and a mother. Citing reasons why the DMK MP and others did not deserve bail, Special Judge OP Saini noted that bail was rejected because of the possibility of the accused tampering with evidence and in order to provide a safe and secure environment for witnesses to testify truthfully, which was possible only by keeping accused in custody. In Kanimozhi’s case, the court observed that she faced no discrimination as a woman, hence bail on grounds of gender grounds was not possible. Kanimozhi has been lodged in Tihar Jail since 20 May. Besides Kanimozhi, the three others who had moved the High Court against a special court order denying them bail two days ago are DMK-run Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar and Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd directors Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal and bollywood producer Karim Morani.
