Modi for PM, Kejriwal for CM: AAP removes banner after social media outrage

In a bizarre move, the Aam Aadmi Party decided to use a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on their website while asking people to vote for their party in the Delhi elections. The slogan on the banner of their website said: “Delhi Speaks: Modi for PM, Arvind for CM.” It also goes on to say, “The voters in Delhi have decided. They want a strong Prime Minister which is why they elected Narendra Modi. They now want a strong Chief Minister so that issues like corruption, inflation, better schools, transport and hospitals could be resolved. They want Arvind Kejriwal again.” However, after much social media outrage, the party has removed the banner from its website. As the battle for Delhi hots up, both BJP and AAP, the prime contenders for the state, have been bombarding Twitter with slogans, images, banners pitting one against the other. But, using the picture of the prime minister, who was earlier a BJP leader is quite absurd. The BJP has said that the party will fight the Delhi assembly elections without a chief ministerial face, banking instead on ‘Brand Modi’ for a repeat of the party’s winning performance in Maharashtra and Haryana. And, it seems even the AAP is now trying to bank on ‘brand Modi.’ In a recent interview to Economic Times, the former Delhi CM Kejriwal said that the AAP’s fight is against BJP, and not Narendra Modi. Kejriwal had decided to take on Narendra Modi in Varanasi in the national election. During an election rally, he had then said, “Today, I want to talk to the farmers of Varanasi. If you want to vote for Modi, he will take away all your land…. Do not vote for Modi, you will not be able to save your land and you will be forced to commit suicide." The irony is that only in April, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the AAP apparently used the images of Modi, then BJP’s prime ministerial candidate on their posters calling the Gujarat model a bluff. The Bharatiya Janata Party had then lodged a complaint with the Delhi Election Commission to prevent the AAP from using images of Modi in their posters which the party alleged was in “bad taste”. However, the Aam Aadmi Party, seen as its main rival, said it would be a contest between its chief Arvind Kejriwal and Jagdish Mukhi, a Delhi BJP veteran earlier seen as a frontrunner for the CM’s chair.
