Poor, poor Kanimozhi. The apple of Papa Karunanidhi’s eye, “ literary heir” to the DMK throne, and comely Rajya Sabha member who set the disgraced communications minister A. Raja’s heart aflutter is officially in big trouble. Named in the latest CBI chargesheet as the “active brain” behind Kalaignar TV, she is also accused of actively pursuing with “intermediaries” and DMK headquarters the “matter regarding reappointment of acccused A Raja as Minister of Communications and Information Technology in 2009, which clearly establishes the strong association of accused Kanimozhi Karunanidhi and accused A Raja in official/political matters.” Worse, according to the Economic Times, “The chargesheet goes on to say that Raja pursued the cause of Kalaignar TV not only for getting registration of the company from the Information and Broadcasting ministry but also for getting it in the Tata Sky bouquet.” [caption id=“attachment_2339” align=“alignright” width=“380” caption=“PTI”] [/caption] First Radiagate, and now the second 2G chargesheet have forever tarnished the carefully cultivated ‘good girl’ image of Tamil Nadu’s favourite poet-politician. The former journalist and pioneer of puthu-kavithai or new wave Tamil poetry was touted as the modern English-speaking face of the DMK and its brand ambassador in New Delhi’s power circuit. Kanimozhi’s goody two-shoes strategy in politics perhaps best summarised in the immortal lines of her poem: “I listened to my father. I went to school, combed my hair, avoided a few friends, wore a shirt, brushed my teeth, obeyed, got married. Now I am waiting. My chance will come.” Sadly that particular ship may never come in now that her behind-the-scene shenanigans have become headline news. And those looking for a bit of ironic humour in Kanimozhi’s current plight, here’s an excerpt from a Tehelka interview back in 2007:
What are the areas you are interested in? Rural development, environment, culture, arts, education… Would you be interested in a ministry concerned with these areas and not a ministry like IT and communications or science and technology? There is nothing you cannot learn. I am not against technology. All I am saying is you can’t leave behind the millions in the rural areas and move ahead.
Now that’s just hilarious!
