Imphal: Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Haji Abdul Salam passed away on Tuesday night following a brief illness. He was 69.
Haji Abdul Salam was the first Manipuri Muslim to be a member of the Rajya Sabha representing Manipur. He had been representing the state in the upper house since 2014, said a Congress official. Born at Heibong Makhong in Thoubal district, Haji Abdul Salam is survived by his wife, son and five daughters.
He was elected to the 3rd, 6th and 8th Manipur Legislative Assembly from Wabagai constituency.
On Wednesday, Congress workers in Manipur led by Manipur chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, MPCC chief TN Haokip paid tribute to the mortal remain of the late MP at Congress Bhavan Imphal.
State government on Wednesday announced half holiday for all the educational institutions, government offices in the state in honour of the departed soul.
Meanwhile, Vice President M Hamid Ansari on Wednesday condoled the passing away of Rajya Sabha MP Abdul Salam. Ansari said Salam will be remembered for his service to the people of Manipur.
"I am deeply grieved to hear about the demise of Shri Abdul Salam, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. A senior parliamentarian from Manipur, Shri Salam will be remembered for his service to the people of the State. I convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved members of the family and join the nation in praying for eternal peace for the departed soul,” he said in a message.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi too shared his condolences on Twitter.
