Cartoon Controversy: Will the textbook revolution be rolled back?

by May 15, 2012

On the Ambedkar cartoon row, yesterday Finance Minister Parnab Mukherjee promised in the Lok Sabha that all objectionable material in school textbooks will be withdrawn and the books that have been sent out will be withdrawn. “Its a major step backward for pedagogy and education in our country,” said Yogendra Yadav, ex-NCERT advisor, on CNN-IBN.

Yogendra Yadav, who was on the advisory committee of NCERT which brought out the political science textbooks, was talking to Rajdeep Sardesai on his show.”You can have old dead preaching textbooks, but you cannot have engaging things on politics.” Yadav pointed out that in order to develop respect for democracy such textbooks were important.

Yogendra Yadav resigned as the adviser for NCERT after there was uproar in the Parliament regarding an Ambedkar cartoon in the class XI textbooks.

When Sardesai asked whether he would write a political science textbook, Yadav said,” Yes, if given a chance I will do it again.”
