Elect Manmohan as Prez, he stays silent: SP leader Azam Khan

by Jun 14, 2012

Why Mamata Banerjee and Mulayam Singh picked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as one of the possible candidates to be elevated to President is still being debated, but for Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan it’s because of his ability to stay silent.

“All the problems of Congress party will be resolved if Manmohan Singh is made the President,” SP leader Azam Khan was reported as saying by CNN IBN.

“This will clear the way for Rahul Gandhi to become the Prime Minister. For the President’s post, we need a person who remains silent, doesn’t apply his mind and passes a bill without much difficulty. Such qualities are found in the current Prime Minister,” Khan said .

While the move by Mulayam Singh and Mamata Banerjee to nominate Singh for president has been seen as a sign of loss of confidence in his functioning, they have not openly stated any reason for their choices.

They had also suggested former president APJ Abdul Kalam and former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee as two other candidates who could find support among various political parties.

Azam Khan is no lightweight in the Samajwadi Party. Khan has been close to the Samajwadi Party chief since the party’s inception and is seen as the representative of the Muslim community in the party.
