Professor arrested for anti-Mamata cartoons gets bail

by Apr 13, 2012

Sibal stopped at just a warning, but Mamata went ahead and did it: nab anyone who expresses anything against you on the web.

A professor from Jadavpur University in Kolkata, was arrested on Friday for allegedly spreading ‘anti-Mamata Banerjee‘ cartoons on the web. He was later granted bail.

Ambikesh Mahapatra, a teacher in the chemistry department of the Jadavpur University, was reportedly attacked by Trinamool Congress workers on Thursday night while he was returning home.

Police have slapped the professor with charges under section 66 of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly forwarding “derogatory images” of Mamata Banerjee to various recipients and mocking her government’s policies.

The professor will now be produced before the Alipore court.

Observers say this situation is unprecedented. But so is the ban on English newspapers in state-run libraries, the removal of Marx from the syllabus  and the paint-all-blue campaign by Banerjee.

One can only wonder what Kolaveri Didi will take it into her head to do next!
