After an India diplomat was arrested and then given bail on charges of visa fraud, India today said it has taken up the issue with the US.
Syed Akbaruddin, spokesperson for the external affairs ministry, in Delhi was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying, "India is shocked and appalled by what the US has done to its diplomat in New York. India is forcefully taking up with the US the treatment meted out to arrested diplomat which is not acceptable."
Meanwhile the US Ambassador in India was also summoned regarding this issue.
Akbaruddin was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying, "You cannot humiliate a mother of two publicly."
Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh on Friday summoned US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell.
Devyani Khobragade, 39, was taken into custody as she was dropping her daughter to school at around 9 am on Thursday. She was detained after US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, India-born Preet Bharara announced charges of visa fraud against her and alleged that she had made false statements in connection with the visa application of an Indian national employed as a babysitter and housekeeper at her home in New York.
While Khobragade is the Deputy Consul General at the Consulate General of India in New York, significantly she was serving as the acting Consul General at the time of her arrest.
She was charged with one count of visa fraud and one count of making false statements, which carry maximum sentences of 10 years and five years in prison, respectively.
