Congress lost UP polls, but spent the most

by Apr 26, 2012

In what could be a good precedent for future elections, many candidates who contested the recently held UP assembly elections, have declared the money they received from their parties to contest the polls, The Indian Express reported on Thursday.

Interestingly, the Congress which faced a rout in the elections, managing to grab only the fourth position, gave more money to its candidates than even the winner Samajwadi Party.

To its credit, most of the candidates who declared the money they received, were also from the Congress party.

Many Congress candidates, including state president Rita Bahuguna Joshi, have disclosed that they received Rs 12 lakh from the party.

Other parties are reported to have received anywhere between Rs 2 lakh to Rs 12 lakh from their respective parties, the paper said.
