Congress digs out Time article on Vajpayee, counters BJP

Jul 9, 2012

New Delhi: Stung by BJP’s criticism of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the Time article, Congress today dug out a 2002 article from the international journal, which spoke of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in disparaging terms.

Ridiculing BJP for treating Time as their “latest Bible”, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari asked whether it also endorses remarks by the same journal in 2002 that attacked Vajpayee.

“I want to ask the BJP, which has made Time magazine their latest Bible, that do they also endorse the remarks made by the same journal on 10 June 2002 about the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. I found portions of the article, too offensive,” Tewari said in a bid to blunt the Opposition attack.

The Congress spokesperson said that the problem with the BJP is that “chickens have come out to roost for them too early”.

Trashing the remarks in Time’s latest edition describing the Prime Minister as an “underachiever”, Tewari had said that in the past eight years the UPA government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has provided political stability, social harmony, internal cohesion, economic growth and a greater role in global affairs.

“This by no stretch of imagination is under achievement,” he said.
