Kolkata: The West Bengal Pradesh Congress today expressed disappointment over Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee not backing the candidature of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for the post of President.
“We do not agree with the choice. We prefer Pranab Mukherjee to be the candidate for the president’s post,” WBPCC president Pradip Bhattacherjee, MP, told PTI after the Trinamool chief and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav named former president APJ Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee for presidentship.
Another senior Congress leader and a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government Manas Bhuniya said, “It is their (Mulayam and Mamata’s) decision.”
Bhuniya, the Irrigation minister, said “as a Congress worker I had appealed to her (Mamata) to support Mukherjee who is a pride of India and also comes from Bengal.”
He said that the party would abide by whatever decision the party high command took.
