Anna Hazare has arrived in the national capital to hold a token fast at Jantar Mantar on Sunday.
Team Anna has rejected the government’s draft of Lokpal bill prepared by the Parliament’s 30-member standing committee. “The committee was fooling not only our team, but the whole nation,” said Anna, while addressing the media with team member Shanti Bhushan today.
This will be his third fast in Delhi and second at Jantar Mantar.
“The government has duped the people of India. Till the C and D category employees are not brought under the Lokpal, there will be no respite from corruption," said Hazare.
Earlier in the day, while leaving for Delhi from his native village Ralegan Siddhi, Anna said that his movement was the second struggle for independence.
Meanwhile, Anna’s key aide, Arvind Kejriwal blamed Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi for influencing the standing committee on Lokpal to formulate a weak draft. “After meetings which continued for three months, the standing committee report only gives constitutional status to the Lokpal. This is a report to fulfill Rahul Gandhi's wishes. The committee has not been given Lokpal the jurisdiction either," said Kejriwal.
"This bill will further increase the corruption in society. This Lokpal bill has tried to destroy the CBI as well. Better not to have a Lokpal Bill than to have this Bill. We reject this Bill completely," he added.
Team Anna has questioned the credibility of the Lokpal report as 17 of the 30 members have submitted notes of dissent on various issues. The team believes that the report is too weak to define the scope and powers of the anti- graft law.
Unlike previous occasions when no member of the political party was allowed to share the dias with Anna as it would make the movement look political, Anna has invited the members of various parties to join Sunday’s protest. Congress, however, has said no to the invitation.
The fast on Sunday will be followed by another one on 27 December at Ramlia ground, which is expected to continue till 5 January.
According to reports, Delhi police has asked Team Anna to submit specific details of the protest at Ramlila ground which includes the number of VIPs expected, details of volunteers and the timings of speeches.
