Tricolours were unfurled, official buildings were cleaned and workers put the final touches on preparations to ready the capital for the nation's 66th Independence Day. The celebrations commemorate how the nation's constituent assembly met on the night of 14 August, 1947 where Jawaharlal Nehru made his epic 'Tryst with Destiny' speech preparing the nation for the challenges that lay ahead. Thousands lined the streets to see the unfurling of the tricolour. While the excitement may not accompany every subsequent Independence Day, its importance is no less now than it was 65 years ago.
