Sri Lanka cabinet suspends Chinese project on approval issue

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lanka suspended a $1.5-billion Chinese luxury real estate project in Colombo on Thursday until it obtains required government approvals, a move that risks a diplomatic row with its biggest foreign investor. The new government, elected in January promising to end the corruption it said was rife in the country, decided at a cabinet meeting to suspend the project critics have called a sweetheart deal between China and the previous administration. The project, the biggest of several Chinese investments in Sri Lankan ports and infrastructure, involves a port city on reclaimed land in the capital, complete with shopping malls, a water sports area, golf course, hotels, apartments and marinas. #Argentina #author #Business #China #Entertainment #facebook #France #Mexico #Russia

Baton-wielding Myanmar police force pro-student protesters to flee

YANGON (Reuters) - Baton-wielding police beat demonstrators showing their support for students blocked from marching into Myanmar's largest city on Thursday, arresting eight and forcing many to flee, activists and witnesses said. About 200 students have been locked in a standoff with police outside a Buddhist monastery in Letpadan, about 140 km (90 miles) north of Yangon, Myanmar's commercial hub, protesting against an education bill that they say stifles academic freedoms. The government has barred them from Yangon, the site of numerous student-led demonstrations, including those in 1988 that sparked a pro-democracy movement that spread throughout the military-ruled country. #Argentina #author #Business #Entertainment #Latin America #Mexico #South Korea #Technology #United Kingdom

Kerry tries to reassure Iran's Gulf rivals on nuclear talks

RIYADH (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry reassured Gulf Arab states on Thursday that Washington was not seeking a "grand bargain" with Iran, in reference to wider political and security cooperation, and said a nuclear deal with Tehran would be in Gulf interests. The United State's Gulf allies, particularly the Sunni Muslim kingdom of Saudi Arabia, are concerned that Shi'ite Muslim Iran will be left empowered by a mooted agreement to end years of dispute over its nuclear ambitions. #Arabic #author #Brazil #Business #China #Entertainment #India #Latin America #markets #Russia #United Kingdom
