Bad news for the Apple HomePod: Survey shows that the smart speaker market is price sensitive

At the 2017 WWDC Apple introduced its HomePod smart speaker, Apple's answer to the Amazon Echo and Google Home. The device is expected to go on sale in The United States, Britain and Australia by December 2017. In what appears to be bad news for the HomePod before it is even available on the market, a survey by Morning Consult shows that the price point for a smart speaker is more important for consumers than any feature that the speaker may have.

The HomePod is priced at $349, while the Amazon Echo is priced at $180 and the Google Home is priced at $129. When asked about the most important factor in purchasing a smart speaker, thirty percent of the respondents said that it was price. The second most important factor was the accuracy of the voice recognition of the device, which was selected by only 14 percent of the respondents, although 18 percent said they did not know which was the most important feature or did not pick an option.

The survey shows that less than half of the respondents are interested in purchasing the HomePod. Existing Apple users were the most likely to purchase the device, but their opinion was split as well. Only 40 percent of users with Apple devices were interested in the product. The Amazon Echo emerged as the most popular smart speaker among all the age groups. Respondents in the 18-44 age group felt more than the other age groups that the HomePod was suitable for their personal needs, but the same people found the Google Home a better fit.
