In a Times of India article, the deputy commissioner of police, Dhananjay Kulkarni Singh says that con women in Mumbai are usually ‘glamourous’.
Understandable, given this is a city where hundreds of women flock everyday with tinsel town dreams and dewy eyed aspiration to make it to magazine covers and page 3 parties in posh five-stars.
Though the number of women con artists isn’t a patch on the number of men (the National Crime Records Bureau pegs the number of men in Mumbai at 348,509), Maharashtra tops all other states when it comes to the number of women indulging in con jobs with a 2174 tally way ahead Andhra Pradesh which comes second with 1794 recorded arrests.
A former IPS officer YP Singh, endorses Kulkarni’s opinion and says in the report, “Many women tricksters entice men who are their admirers to give them loans, citing fake expediency of an emotional nature. And men easily fall prey to their blandishments. Coupled with this, the desire to make easy money for life on the fast lane drives women to commit cheating.”
Given the city’s appetite for glamour, luxury and all things good looking, does this even surprise anyone?
