Maharashtra govt waiting for Aamir Khan’s nod to de-addiction campaign

Sep 11, 2012

Nagpur: The Maharashtra Government is trying to rope in Bollywood actor Aamir Khan to be brand ambassador of its de-addiction campaign. The star is yet to respond, though he has acknowledged the communication from the state.

The state is hopeful of his response, but would approach other movie stars, Maharashtra’s minister for social justice Shivajirao Moghe told PTI. “The first-ever literary meet with an anti-addiction theme will be organised on October 2 at Pune. Literary figures, artistes and organisations working in the field will be invited,” he said.

The department has also instituted cash awards for those promoting anti-addiction through plays, articles, news reports and awareness campaigns. “Thousands of families are ruined because of liquor addiction, but during the few years, there has been no great literary work, or movie or play on the subject. I believe more that a play, a work of art or literature can motivate people to give up addiction, more than the law,” he said.

He said that well-known social worker Sindhutai Sapkal has accepted to campaign. “Sapkal should be very effective with women who bear the brunt, when families are destroyed as men become slaves of vices,” he said.
