If you're bored of watching the traditional Republic Day at Rajpath on television and have always wished for more celebrations on the occasion of Republic Day, this year in Mumbai your wish has come true, with a range of options to choose from. So what can you expect?
Live bands at Marine Drive in south Mumbai, Worli Seaface in central Mumbai and Bandra, according to a report in the Mumbai Mirror. And who do we thank for this? Anand Mahindra, of Mahindra and Mahindra, who has reportedly responded to a request from the state government to add to celebrations this Republic Day
If you don't like bands and prefer to stop to smell the flowers then you can stop along Marine Drive where Mukesh Ambani's RIL group is reportedly going to deck the roads with flowers (hopefully not the divider in the middle of road).
The Tata Group is planning to fund a fireworks display along Worli Bay and the Aditya Birla group is planning to put up banners advertising activities that will take place at various locations.
Why this year?
The state government has been planning to make national day celebrations more colourful for some time now and had planned initiatives like opening local gardens to communities to hoist the national flag, Army and Navy bands performing for the public, floral decorations of pavements and roundabouts, use of Bandra Worli sea link for light and sound shows, the Indian Express reports.
Last year's Independence Day celebrations were marred by the death of former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.
There is also a campaign to boycott all state organised celebrations across the country including Mumbai during Republic Day in order to protest the death of the 23-year-old woman who was gangraped and assaulted in Delhi.
