Broke Bengal? Not at Mamata’s mega mela
Kolkata: Gautam Sarkar is like an affable host showing guests around his new home. He explains the artwork hanging on the walls. He shows off the murals outside. He points to the hurricane lanterns hanging from the rafters. “That’s for the village touch,” he says. “But there are electric lanterns because even villages now have electricity.” This is no ordinary house. It’s the stall for West Bengal’s Department of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare made up to look like a designer thatched house. It’s part of Pragati Utsav – the weeklong mela to highlight the first year of the Mamata Banerjee government.
