Kuttanadan Punjayile is a traditional Malayalam folk song sung in chorus by boat rowers during their ceremonial races.
We see it assume its new mesmerising form in the voice of singer Vidya Vox, who gives words to the beautiful traditional song featuring musician Jomy George. This version of the original song 'Kuttanadan Punjayile' melody sets the ball rolling for the group.
The video is the perfect amalgamation of modernity and traditional tune and costumes. Even Vidya, who is popularly known by her screen name Vidya Vox, highlights the importance of one's roots not only through her music but also by adorning a mix set of clothing. Giving her company are the two dancers Sreenidhi and Sreedevi, dressed in a white sari embroidered with bright golden brocade at the edges, performing the classical dance Mohiniattam.
The song is a seamless concoction of the incessant idea of belonging vis-à-vis a sense of rootlessness in a foreign land. The lyrics also blend in perfectly, so much so that one sometimes can't make out the difference between two distinct languages Malayalam and English.
They have successfully revived the versatility of the traditional folk song 'Kuttanadan Punjayile' .
