Heartbreaks and sugary love-songs might just be another chick thing, but Maroon 5, with their new video of Payphone, their hit single that aired this April and smashed quite a few bestselling charts, steps smartly out of post-breakup territory and takes pop videos up by a notch.
The new video of Payphone is a comic book version of its earlier, decidedly American procedural cop-show type video of the same song.
Though the original is mostly uninspiring even to bubblegum pop lovers, the new version with comic book illustration duplicates of each frame in the older video is spunky and makes for an edgy addition to an otherwise sappy love song.Watch video here:
The characters in the comic book version resemble the ones in the video in certain aspects, but are almost satirical spin-offs on the original. When the tattooed stud from the video takes on comic book proportions, it’s tempting to read the same as a dig at the stereotypes that the American boy band video culture has spawned.
While the original isn’t coherent in its storyline, the comic book version takes you on a trippy ride of music, action and visuals – paisa vasool, in Bollywood language.
