Our readers posted strong, smart and opinionated comments to the article titled – The NRI double standard: Daughters, go home! – which we have now published as a separate post.
Some readers argue that it is more important for Indian girls to learn about and imbibe Indian culture, while others question the concept of Indian culture itself, and say that different codes of conduct for sons and daughters is nothing short of hypocrisy.
As is our policy, we have edited out certain comments that were directed at the author.
Nuthakkkiarkay: If the girl must ‘fit in’ with her husband’s family after marriage, she must learn to be flexible, to adjust without argument — lessons of life that some NRI parents feel just can’t be learnt in ” America’s hedonistic culture of unabashed gender equality, money, sex, drugs and self-gratification.”“In the US, there is no difference between a daughter and a son. At a certain age, all the kids must fly the coup and face life on their own. But that’s not the case in India, where most girls go from their parental homes to their marital homes and are still expected to abide by a strict code of conduct. You can take people out of India, but you can’t take India out of the people!” says Dr Dheep, psychologist and counsellor.
Is this a doublstandard ? I do not think so as these actions are very protective about our daughters and our girls suffer more because of Amecica`s heddonistic culture and this happened to majority of the girls in our family and friend`s circles .
R. Chaudhry: Unless equal ‘protection’ is shown to the sons, it *is* double-standards at play.
Jay: This is great Indian hypocrisy… want everything… money, fame, luxury and at the same time culture, simplicity, obedience….. INSANE!!!
VK: Kudos to the author. We as males are endowed with some privileges that we take for granted. Let’s at least start the conversation and start understanding it.
Nomadic Wave: So Parenting has to forced as Per Ms Thiagarajan. If I want my daughter to grow up with a certain culture and my son in a different culture Its my wish .
Men and women are not same , equality is the biggest charade invented by western elites to exploit manpower for capitalism .
