Varun Gandhi leaked crucial defence information, alleges letter by Edmonds Allen to PMO

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's office, US-based lawyer C Edmonds Allen has reportedly claimed that BJP parliamentarian Varun Gandhi was honey trapped and leaked significant information about defence matters to arms manufacturers.

The letter is also marked to the defence minister and the national security advisor to help them identify members who might have compromised on sensitive information.

Gandhi was forced to compromise with the information after being blackmailed with pictures of him with foreign escorts and prostitutes, NDTVreported. The complaint is dated 16 September and alleges that arms dealer Abhishek Verma used Gandhi to disclose defence details to arms manufacturers looking to score contracts for India.

Gandhi used to be a member of the high-profile Defence Consultative Committee.

While speaking to India Today, Gandhi denied having a conversation with Verma since he joined politics and said, “I know Abhishek Verma. His parents were Rajya Sabha MPs from the Congress. I even attended his wedding when I was young. But I have had no interaction with Abhishek Verma ever since I came into public life.”

He also commented on Allen’s letter and said that the lawyer does not have a shred of evidence to back his charges. Members of the Defence Committee do not have access to any sensitive information, he said while denying all charges levied against him.

This was corroborated with statements by senior leaders in BJP carried by The Economic Times. They reiterated that documents or information of classified nature are not usually shared with members of the parliamentary committee.

Allen has also provided a CD with several photographs to the PMO. The report also quoted Gandhi as saying that the charges are “too ridiculous to comment on.”

Nevertheless, he also talked to NDTV as well and said that the allegations might be intended at preventing a role for him in the Uttar Pradesh election. According to reports, he is a favoured candidate for BJP’s chief ministerial candidate in Uttar Pradesh.

He said that he had only met Verma while studying in London to ANI. He also said that he will file a demation lawsuit against Prashant Bhushan.

Interestingly, ex-AAP members and leaders of Swaraj Abhiyaan, Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav, alleged on Thursday that PMO was aware of the leak but took no action. They also said that despite having the information, the government of India went ahead and signed Rs 58,000 crore deal for procurement of 36 Rafale Aircrafts.

Allen had earlier also provided evidence against Verma in several cases after their partnership fell through in 2012.

Verma was arrested in the navy war room leak for trying to bribe defence officials but granted bail in 2008.
