On Sunday, terror struck an Army camp in north Kashmir's Uri town when militants stormed a battalion headquarters in the wee hours of the morning, killing 17 soldiers.

Four militants were killed in the shootout with the Indian Army which lasted a few hours.

Sources in intelligence agencies said that Jaish-e-Mohammad was identified as the perpetrator of the Uri attack after a representative of the terror outfit called up a local journalist in Kashmir to claim responsibility.

This was one of the deadliest on an army base in Kashmir since militant attacks began in 1989.

Many took to Twitter to express their grief over the attack.

In an apparent reference to Pakistan, President Pranab Mukherjee stated that Indian Security forces will thwart the evil designs of terrorists and their backers. He also condemned the attack and the loss of lives of the soldiers in Uri.

Strongly denouncing the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi saluted the soldiers who were martyred and said their service to the nation will always be remembered.

US Ambassador to India Richard Verma too responded to the attack.

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi too condemned the attack while his mother Sonia Gandhi expressed hope that the perpetrators of the attack will be brought to justice.

Textile Minister Smriti Irani termed the attack as 'mindless' and extended condolences to the families of the martyred soldiers.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the attack was inhuman and cowardly.

Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray also reacted to the cowardly attack.
