Team Anna will give up its fast today and will provide alternative politics. Political scientist Yogendra Yadav said that even if Team Anna enters 2014 Lok Sabha elections and gets only marginal seats, they can play a important role.
“To my mind the real problem is not how many seats it wins in 2014, but what role it plays in national agenda setting. Very small parties all over the world play a very important role in agenda setting,” said Yogendra Yadav to CNN-IBN.
Team Anna‘s focus need not be the 2014 elections, but can survive without any media attention, Yadav said.
“You talked about 20 to 30 parliamentary seats. My baseline expectation is zero. Why should this movement be focused on number of votes and seats won in the next two years time,” he said.
“Why should we expect magic? Why can’t a movement live with a low media exposure like all other movements for sometime,” he added.
Yadav also said that Team Anna can influence Indian politics without even entering parliament by attracting idealistic youths to politics.
“My question would be how many idealistic youth take to politics because of this party, which will change the shape of politics for years to come. Does it change norms and rules of politics about transparency and ethics? For that you don’t have to have a single seat in the parliament,” he said.
