Six students killed in UP school roof collapse

Lucknow: Six class 5 students were killed Friday when a portion of their school’s roof collapsed, burying them under the debris, in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor district, police said.

The incident took place at a private school, Meenakshi Junior High School in Jalilpur Chandpur area of the district, 440 km from Lucknow.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Nitin Tiwari told IANS that over two dozen students were buried in the rubble and were rescued after a two-hour-long joint operation by local residents, firemen and police. The rescued children were taken to a nearby medical facility, where doctors declared five of them dead.

More than half a dozen kids are reported to be in serious condition, with two battling for their lives, police said.

Police said that they were trying to get hold of the school management to ascertain the reasons for the accident.
