Setback for Gujarat govt as HC rejects 10% reservation for EBCs in educational institutions

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday rejected the government's notification granting 10 percent quota for EBCs (economically backward classes) in educational institutions.

This comes at a time when the state is reeling under protests by Dalits, after self-styled cow vigilantes thrashed Dalit youths for skinning the carcass of a cow. Gujarat also, last week, saw Anandiben Patel resign from the post of chief minister.

On 4 May, 2016, the Gujarat government announced to implement 10 percent quota in admission for students belonging to EBCs with effect from the current academic year, reported The Indian Express. This is apart from the existing reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs, the report added.

The government's move to implement the 10 percent quota came after the Hardik Patel-led Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti agitation demanded inclusion of the Patels in the OBC category for reservation. Patel rejected the Gujarat government's announcement of 10 percent reservation for the economically backward among upper castes.

Patel's Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti rejected the move as another "lollipop" extended by the BJP and the state government to "mislead" their community.

The agitation seeking reservation has been raging since late 2014. The demands came after the community was affected by the economic slowdown, and the government is now finding it difficult to control the protests.
