The Central Board for Direct Taxes (CBDT) said it will investigate the information leak on the Income Tax department’s raids about liqour baron Ponty Chadha’ properties.
CBDT official SS Rana, who led the raids has been transferred for allegedly mishandling the raids and leaking the information out to Chadha.
The CBDT said it had confirmed information about Rs 100 crore being there in Chadha’s locker. But the IT department officials only found a Rs 100 note in the locker.
Ponty Chadha is said to have a daily income receipt of over Rs 50 crore, sources said. But officials did not find any cash during the raids.
Rs 2 crore worth cash and Rs 5 crore worth jewellery were the only things seized.
Computers were also formatted before the raids could be conducted to remove any damaging data.
The CBDT, however, denied reports that the liqour baron was tipped off about the raids.
Chadha is said to be close to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati.
The IT department had yesterday raided 17 places belonging to Chadha across Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
